Don't take them off, once they get old you will never get them reattached and have them look the same.
As for painting the, take them with the blue painters masking take and paint them while attached to the truck.
Check some of the hardware stores, there are some new paints that are mode especially for plastic.

I thought about getting a good primer/adhesion promoter for plastic and painting them with the same paint color code as the body, making them body colored. Anyone done this if so how did it look? It's just an Idea. I thought about doing that and maybe some Range rove rsport side gills, painting the surrounds white to match the body and the keeping the center mesh areas black.

I've never seen it done but.... If you wanted to get a good idea the new LR3 is going to have them body coloured and there are pics all over the interweb so check it out as compared to the current and see what you think.
I used to not be able to stand that the flares were not painted but after realizing the number of times I/others/parking lot etc. bumped things into them I started to see the benefit of them being the way they are. Just food for thought. If you take the plunge give us some pics and good luck!!!

I think it would look good, but you do bring up a good point about dings and bumps in parking lots. I work part time as a bouncer and I parks my truck outsid in front of the night club so I can watch it and some drunk girls parked close and opened their door hard into my disco, but lo and behold the fender flares saved the day, and not a bit of damage. I yelled at them and said "hey!to watch my truck"!
