Really?

That must have been you I smelt coming down the trail...Or saw flipped on nose from braking down the side of a mountain.

I'm not sure what the difference of the engine running at 3000RPM under acceleration or deceleration, but 3000 RPM is 3000 RPM to me... Why would it make a difference if it is speeding up or slowing down?

Is it the same as walking backwards in your Nike's? Because they are only meant to walk forward, not backward?

Well you better stop driving it altogether then. Because you're putting the same amount of stress on it when you drive. I use engine braking all the time around the mountain roads I camp along. And we have some awful big mountains out here.

So I'm in the same situation as you. Except I'll have brakes at the bottom of the road.

How do you guys get engine braking from me using my brake pedal to brake while going down a hill? Yes I had to use the transmission for afew weeks on the back roads to my house but I never went above 20 MPH even down a hill. I would drive slowly and if the truck accelerated past 20mph I would step on the brake pedal (with what was left of it) plus gently apply the emergency brake to slow the vehicle down to prevent any reving or stress on the engine. Like I said before, I prefer NOT to rev up the engine and Id rather take a chance of wearing out a e-brake than burning out an engine. And to stop driving it all together? Why? My brakes work and I need to get to work every day. I took a chance and sold my second vehicle so unlike some of you, I rely 100% on my Disco.

On a side note you guys are useless sometimes.

Your truck is not going to last very long, the PARKING BRAKE is not meant for slowing you down, thats what the BRAKES are for.
Engine braking is using the resistance of the engine to slow the car, I dont know how steep your mountain road is, but you drop the transmission into 2nd gear and let the truck drive itself down the hill at whatever speed the engine allows, thats engine braking and it is NOT hard on the engine.
Another form of engine braking is shifting into a lower gear on the transmission to slow you down instead of using the brakes, so lets say you're driving at 60mph and you dropped into 3rd gear, you would start to slow down, thats engine braking.
When I offroad I let the transmission do 90% of my braking by running her in 2nd gear the whole times I'm off road.
I use 3rd gear when towing a heavy trailer, 200 miles last summer, in 3rd gear at 60mph, with the cruise set and thats with over 200,000 miles on it, no harm done.
You are doing things all wrong.
Using your PARKING BRAKE to slow you down is a good way to grenade the transfer case.
Your engine is meant to be revved, you cant over rev it either, the computer will not let that happen, even if you were doing 80mph down the highway and dropped the transmission into 1st gear you would not hurt the engine.
The transmission would not go into 1st gear for one, and the computer would not let the engine over rev for two.
You are going to burn out your brakes, loose all control and run off the side of your mountain, hit a moose and die.
We have been trying to teach you this for a long time, if you want your car to last forever dont drive it, park it in a humidor and look at it through the glass.
If you want to enjoy your car then just drive the Goddamn thing and dont worry about it.

I believe he was using his parking brake as a supplement when the normal brakes had bought the farm.

Then again, if it was me, I wouldn't have driven it down a mountain road in that condition...

I misunderstood than if that was the case, my mistake and I apologize for that.

Yeah, I'd have either rented a car, borrowed one or paid someone else to fix my truck today so I could drive it tomorrow. (I have done that before, dropped off at shop, bummed a ride to work, wife pays for repair, get dropped off at shop and drove it home, not ideal but in a pinch...)

Almost as useless as your truck after you keep ignoring every bit of advice given to you, and you continue driving it down a mountain with no brakes using your PARKING brake to slow down and swerving when you see wild life in the road. But its all good. Once you get that ACE, and you save your engine and transmission from the horrors of engine braking, your going to be set to be driving up and down those mountain roads.

Good thing your not listening to anybody who has been there and done that, because you are obviously just such a smart guy that you don't need anybodies help. Everybody's just useless because you obviously just know it all.

My thoughts exactly. I'd rather have an inconvenient day than an unsafe one.
