How much should I offer?
Hello all, I have an opportunity to get my hands on a clean 2002 D2 SE model. The catch is, it will probably need an engine and transmission. I will have to look at the vehicle myself, but my wifes boss claims it has been well taken care of but needs those work I mentioned. What would be a fair price for a vehicle that probably can't be driven too far? I am in California.

So it needs a new engine and transmission but it's been taken care of? :/
For me I guess it would depend on the condition of the paint and interior. I guess if everything but the engine and tranny are immaculate or in good shape. I'd offer no more than $2,200. And that's if you really want the truck. Otherwise I'd jew him down. The engine and tranny are going to cost you.

Hello, maybe well taken care of is too broad. I take good care of my 2003 D2, but damn engine ticks like no other haha. I would go used parts if both were truly needed. I will probably keep it for a while as my DD , my current dd (96 MB E320) will be sold in a few weeks and need a car soon. I will price out used parts today and make some time to look at this weekend. May not make sense, but who knows. The 4.0 motor is a lot less than the 4.6 that I was shopping around for a few months ago. I will update condition, but look forward to more opinions. Thanks!

That's the correct number.
$6000 truck, needs $2000 motor and $1500 trans = $2500.
If you value your time at all it's $1500 worth of labor. More at a shop. Plus incidentals.
Yeah. $1000. Tops.
The guy would make better money parting it out. But you don't get to charge part-out prices if you just want the whole thing gone.

Those ZF trannies are bullet proof, so if it does need one then it makes me wonder why. It also depends on what is wrong with the engine, if it just needs an hg job (very typical) then I would not be concerned, but it the engine is toast then it's a different matter. Assuming worst case that the engine and tranny are toast then I would not go over $1000.

good luck trying to find an engine for that thing. Check on Car-Parts.com you will be doing well to find one for less than $1500, there just aren't that many around. Here in San Diego they are getting $1750 for used engines and another $750 to $1000 for trannys. If it were me, I wouldn't pay anymore than about $500 for the truck. Seriously consider gettting a remanufactured motor for it if you are going to keep it. You know what you are getting with a warranty. I am going through hell right now trying to get a replacement motor for one of our DIIs that the mechanic screwed up a head gasket job on. Good luck! Phil
