I've also heard about oil additives being able to help the ticking. My motor doesn't tick at 130,000 miles. I run 20w-50 oil, can the thicker oil be a preventative measure to the tick in anyway?

Preventative? Probably not. Can it quiet *A* tick? Sure. Depends on what the tick is from.

I won't have any affect on piston skirts or liners slamming around, but if it's lubrication related it has a chance.

I don't think so.
I have run 10W30, 10W40, 15W40 and 20W50 and the tick is always there, more pronounced with 20W50 than with 15W40. 20W50 actually made it much worse than before. I also ran for 500 miles with 1Qt MMO in 15W40 and the tick went away, go figure.

I wonder if there is anyway to stake the liners in place... or maybe glue them with something high temp.

So can the liner drop down into the crankcase? What happens if the piston rings pass the top of the liner, wouldnt it break the rings or pop the liner down into the bottom end?

Yes. Go read the thread on Discoweb.org...PT Schram has a machine shop that does this for him.

A good auto machine shop should be able to handle pinning the liners for you, but it sounds like it probably won't be cheap...

I wonder is a couple of tack welds on the bottom of the liners to the block would stop this?

Mystery Solved!!

Anyone in the market for an '01 Disco w/ CDL, 144k on the clock, and a slight ticking problem? Cut you a good deal.

You can't weld aluminum and steel , or am I wrong?
