What are we looking at? The coolant leak into the cylinder?

Man that is not good. The cheapest fix would be a used engine. I guess you could pull it yourself and have it re-sleaved but not sure how much something like that costs. Sorry for your loss can you give us some history around how it got that way? How long has the head gaskets been leaking? Did it overheat?

JB Weld that sucker and driver her for another 100k!!

A used engine or having that one rebuilt and re-sleeved is your only option(s).

Sorry to see your engine like that

ok heres a shot - have you changed your spark plugs prior to the engine work?

I always use compressed air to blow out any debris that may be hiding around the old plugs...this "could" have happened because a piece of something fell into the cylinder during a plug change...it then (basically) flopped around until it got wedged between the piston and the cylinder wall and bam it cracked the sleeve at the same time it punched the piston...if you can look at the surface of the sleeve/crack to see if it is as smooth as the rest of the sleeve...if the sleeve/crack has a (matching) dent/hole...there might have been something in your engine.

Just an opinion - to me it looks like something was in there

Sorry bout your loss

Robert

PS...the piston hole could have been caused by the sleeve failing (metallurgical problems) and then warping into the pistons path

Depends on how attached you are to the truck. If the rest of the truck is in great shape and you just love your Rover (as I do mine) then:

Pull the engine, crate it up and send it out for overhaul. The shop will decide if it's repairable and will proceed accordingly. Either way that one's gotta come out. Hard to tell from the picture but my concern would be the aluminum casting beside the cracked sleeve. If that's OK then it can probably be re-sleeved and repaired. If that casting it also craked or damaged from the combustion gases then I'd say you're looking at a replacement engine. If that's the case, then roverlandparts.com may be the best bet.

Best,
Dave
