RE: Installed drive shaft/strange vibration
Just an update: I talked to Tom and he said I should try throwing it into neutral when I get to 75 and see what happens so I am going to try this out in the next couple of days when I get to an interstate. For anyone out there needing a new shaft the people at Tom Woodsare really helpfull, he said if we couldn't figure it out he would send me a new one triple checked!! (Thats good service)

RE: Installed drive shaft/strange vibration
salve7, any luck discovering the source of the vibration? I finally got my Disco back yesterday (36 days and $11k in insurance-covered repairs later), and the 75-80 mph vibration is...still there.
I have four brand new, just installed and balanced General Grabber AT2s on the Disco now, so I don't think the vibration is the tires. I supposed I'll have to call Tom Woods again now that I have the truck back...

RE: Installed drive shaft/strange vibration
Glad you have your ride back!!!
I talked to Tom and he is going to send me the new, "triple checked" shaft and a return label so I can trade them out. I can only assume that this is the source of the vibrations on the grounds that we both have the same problem and are using the same shafts.
Do you have any pics of your truck with the new tires? I'm going to have to get new ones soon and am looking around at the different options. I'll post more when I get the new shaft. (side note: you don't happen to know how to install a brushguard on a series two do you?)

Posted some pictures here:

The new tires look great--not sure yet how significantly they'll impact gas mileage, but I went with the AT2s based on the recommendation of several other members of this site, so you may want to check them out.
Can't help with the brush guard--as you can see, I have an ARB bull bar on mine.
I need to give Tom Woods a call, I guess...

RE: Installed drive shaft/strange vibration
Salve7, what was the result of installing your new drive shaft? I had mine put on today (decided not to do the work myself this time), and I've only driven the truck briefly on the highway. Traffic was heavy enough that it was hard to test at high speeds, but my first impression is that the vibration is greatly diminished--but still slightly apparent at the 75-80 range.
I will say that Tom Woods has been great--they shipped out a new shaft quickly at no cost, with a prepaid shipping label to return the first shaft.

They did the same for me however I am waiting for some $$$ so I can have it installed. I will let you know next week how it goes. You say that you still have the vibration? I wonder if anyone else with a tom woods shaft has the same problem (is this normal with their beefier shafts on a stock disco?) I agree that tom woods has been great as far a customer service goes!!

RE: Installed drive shaft/strange vibration
Still haven't done a lot of highway driving with the truck, as it's been back at the shop several times for more accident-related work. But my current impression is about the samethe vibration is significantly diminished, and the range at which it's felt is smaller. There's a slight shudder right at 75, maybe through 78 mph. That's an unfortunate spot because that's a not uncommon passing speedif the vibration was at 80, I'd probably never know it was there.
But the shudder is so subtle now that I couldn't honestly say definitively that it wasn't there pre-Tom Woods. The last shaft had a very noticable vibrationthis one I might not have picked up on if I wasn't looking for it.
I'm leaning towards just sticking with the new shaft. Anyone know whether this slight vibration has the potential to cause/contribute to any other problems? If not, I'm ok with itbut if it's likley to create more issues down the road, I'll keep working on this.

RE: Installed drive shaft/strange vibration
Still trying to decide what to do about my drive shaft. Any recommendations? What would you do? Live with the modest 75 mph vibration and just be happy you have greasable u-joints? Or send the shaft back to Tom Woods and look elsewhere? (I don't think Tom will be willing to send a third drive shaft out, though he is happy to give me a complete refund.)
I start to think the vibration is acceptable, then I drive my wife's Explorer and it drives me nuts that the Explorer accelerates cleanly through 75 mph!
Is there anything elseI can do to attempt a fix for this short of sending the shaft back to Tom Woods?

RE: Installed drive shaft/strange vibration
I dont drive that fast so I would never know about the vibration, I would take it to a drive line shop and see what they say, maybe they can balance the new shaft?
I would think that if you drive at that speed on a regular basis or on long trips I would have it fixed. I tend to think that that small vibration is something tearing itself apart. Small now but huge later.
Your wifes Explorer might ride smoother than your DII but I bet it doesnt look half as good.
