intake funnel device
I saw a interesting thing the other day that I find hard to believe. There are venders selling little metal devices to put in your intake tube that creat a tornado effect by swirling the air as it goes down the tube. They claim 15% increase in mpg and I find that very hard to believe. Are not our trucks injected - the injectors atomize the fuel? what am I missing and anyone have one of these in veh and can attest to results? They are very cheap and easy to install. Did I read somewhere that the new disco has a intake tube that creates this same effect?
I used a magic wand on mine, which has the same effect, but unfortunately cost $35. I will lend it to you for $10, if you will send it back afterward.
These devices have been around for some time, and keep cropping up under different names. I thin the latest I saw was the "Vornado".
Obviously, I am a bit of a skeptic.

OK, while holding back a large smile, there is a slight - read miniscule - advantage there. This assumes a few things though. Generally the air intake needs to be into a carburettor, with one port....usually mounted on top of the engine. What you are reducing is the intake losses to the carburettor. While the K (or Q or C) factor for a straight edge air loss is high, most carb maf have a nice cone inlet. The inlet loss here is very minor, and the air does tend to swirl as it goes in. The "pre-swirl" effect gained by this type of item is usually offset by the restriction from the material (ie piece of bent steel) in the airstream. So while it may work for really crappy intake systems on perhaps a 79 olds cutlass....it will not work on newer vehicles as someone has realized this over the years. You are better off getting a K&N and a larger intake pipe. Basically the engine is a large air pump. More air mass flow....more HP. Reduce air temp = more mass = more hp. A far as our cars are concerned, that thing makes a great orange peeler/slicer/dicer.
