Default Key Cylinder is TOUGH

Hi Everyone,

The ignition key cylinder in my '03 is really tough. Key goes in fine, turns forward to start the truck just fine, and turns back to turn off the truck just fine.

The problem is when you go to remove the key. It takes a ton of effort to push "IN", and then rotate the last little bit for key removal. My wife can't do it, and it's tough for me.

I've read that this could be that the shifter isn't in "Park" (stretched cable), or that the cylinder itself needs lubrication. I can't find resources for a Disco II...can someone explain how to fix this?

It shouldn't be tough! Land Rover targeted soccer moms as a core Buyer's group.

I had to squirt graphite powder into my ignition switch opening, then work the key in/out/left/right for a bit to soften up mine.

I also had to put my foot on the brake pedal.

Doing the above makes the key easy to use for me now.

I've read that the graphite powder stains everything. Did you have that problem?

No, all of the powder went inside the ignition switch. None came out, so no stains.

Maybe wipe off your ignition key once. The powder won't get on the key a 2nd time in my experience.

mine all have those similar problems. Lately, i tried contact cleaner and sprayed inside with straw until it dripped. Few times i did. Then the slot got loose and started working again and then I sprayed inside with wd40 to lube. Amazing. Few weeks ago, we cant hardly start it and it took forever.

Graphite spray worked like a charm.

The key comes out dirty and black now, but i figure thatll go away over time.

Graphite = hated by most professional locksmith....

I'd have just lightly lubed the the key & inserted it in/out a few times. That should be enough lube to break it free & not enough to eventually clog it up like using to much lube or Graphite.

Silicone spray should work as well. Wonder why lock smiths don't like graphite, it's awesome?
