Default Knowing what we know now about the Discovery II

I find myself pondering this question every so often when driving the Discovery. It's been 11 years since the last DII. There have been many modifications done to prolong the life of these trucks.

So here's my question to you guys.

Let's say we took an 04 DII that just rolled off the shelf and immediately did the inline thermostat mod, installed an HD fan clutch, brass propeller waterpump, changed to green coolant, and ran 15w-40 every 3k for the test of time.

How long could this engine last? How long do you think the original headgaskets would last?

Thought this might be an interesting discussion.

Dump the crap V8 engine and stick in a diesel or TD5 engine and it'll see 250K no probs. My TD5 has worked hard and is 130K miles and no signs of any problems.

IMO what does anyone expect from any truck 11 to 17 years old which invariably has been abused by multiple owners who failed to service it etc and is in the twilight of it's lifespan, any vehicle would be the same given the same circumstances.

Mine has only been abused by one owner, but that's a good point. I think a lot of base model discoveries started life as rental cars too.

To the OP a lot of the equipment is original to my 2000 Disco II with about 155k... except for the engine, and the original ran great until it got hot for an unknown reason. If I had been more tuned to maintenance needs would it have overheated? I'd say no. So my best answer to your question is a very, very long time.

The engine I am having redone at 166k was running fine but inside it needed new bearings. Aside from that it was basically fine.

The 04 was the absolute worst rover v8 ever. It was the last one. 99 D2 fresh off the line would have a better chance.

I thought the 04 was supposed to be the pinnacle!!!??? Locking CDL, big engine and transmission. Oh, secondary air--thats a minus.

Yes, I've spent money on it. Full service was about $1k. SAI is a pain. Things break. Things get fixed.

Maybe I'm just lucky. (Touches wood)
Yeah you need to delete that post. Every time I brag on my Rover it breaks.
