looking at Discovery
Hello all like the forum anyways I have an offer from a guy to trade me his 96' disco for my 91' jeep yj. I am strongly considering this because the disco is far better for the family but still very off-road capable . What should i be looking for what are some common issues with this generation of disco. Any information would be great! Here are some pics

Wow it looks really clean! Yeah the Disco will be more family friendly and a nicer ride on the highway. If you know how to do some maintenance yourself I'd go for it. The guys on this forum are veryhelpful and can give you enough info to do a full frame off restoration if you needed LOL! You'll have a bit of a learning curve but the Disco I's are pretty easy to work on from what I've personally found so far.

Check the motor for oil pressure and make sure that it's not had any overheating issues. Common failures on this motor are slipped cyl liners which takes out the whole block. I had weak oil pressure on mine when I got it that was fixed by doing a flush and cleaning out the oil pan & pick up tube. Which also seems pretty common.
Other things:
Rough running = carboned up plugs/bad wires/clogged cats/bad O2 sensors (Must run premium gas)
If they're the original cats & O2 sensors they most likelywill need to be replaced. OEM cats are very expensive. You can weld in some after market ones with good results. There are threads on this.
I'm sure some of the other guys can think of some other things too?

Looks like the guy took care of it and worked on it. It has the D2 first generation headlight upgrade for the D1. I want to do this myself.
I would go for it. Check for leaks everywhere. Drive it and try all of the accessories. Listen for pops, clunks and excessive whine. Some whine is normal. Also check the linkage and make sure it locks and moves from high to low. On the shifter, left locks both driveshafts together, then forward gives you low speed on the tranny. This is a great feature on the D1, make sure it works.
FYI, you have to run premium and will get 13 to 15 MPG. Man..... I just took another look, it looks good....

RE: looking at Discovery
Seems too good to be true to me. Who in his right mind, would like to trade an in good shape Discovery for a 5 year older Jeep ?!?!
Don't get me wrong....I've been without a Jeep for the first time in the last 20 years for 2 weeks now. I purchased my Disco2 last december and was keeping my built up TJ as a toy for occasional trail driving. I decided to sell it 2 weeks ago, cause I was simply not using it. I've owned a 1987YJ, 1990 YJ,1996XJ and the one I just traded, a 1999 fully built TJ Sahara. The Disco is in a class of its own, just like the jeeps, but the creature comforts and the fact that it's so much more versatile in the way of utility makes me question the offer. Especially when you consider the fact that the 1996 Discovery new, was worth approx. 3-4 times the price of a new 1991 YJ ?!?!
If the Disco is really in good shape, I say spend a couple of $$$$ to have it checked out to make sure that it doesn't need a head gasket, or doesn't have a slipped liner or anything that would justify such an incomprehensive offer. And if your blessed enough to find out that all is fine, jump on it before the guy wakes up.
Then you can turn around and get another 1991 YJ for the $500.00 that its worth.

RE: looking at Discovery
Hemmmm, I know, I just sold my 99 TJ for $5000.00 more than I paid for my 2000 Disco 2 SE7 with 52000 miles 8 months ago, and my Disco was worth twice the price of the TJ when new. I meant $500.00 as a figure of speach. But then again, any real Jeeper would pay more for a CJ than a YJ. Some believe that the CJ was the only real Jeep. You know how it is, same goes for the Disco 2 versus Disco 1 and LR3 versus Disco 2........Peoplejust don't like changes
