Mr. Rover ate my U Joints
I had been wanting to replace these for a while, I always knew they were bad... but it always seemed like a daunting task that I would have a hard time doing. I finally realized it was time to do them when I couldn't drive above 50 without shaking (I know this is incredibly stupid)
So I finally got them out:
My Rover is lucky I love it... I was up till 12 last night in ten degree weather, lying on a concrete floor just to get the old bolts and nuts (that had been destroyed) off.

Damn...! pretty chewed up ujoints. i had one that looked like that, went with a whole new front driveshaft from tom woods, the shaft is greasable and so are their ujoints for around $400... http://www.4xshaft.com/index.html what a difference it made

I also wanted to say that I was doing this with my dad who works at lockheed martin and he was very surprised to see how the shaft is made...
He says if you were to look at it under a microscope the entire shaft is actually spring that will bend under a lot of force. This allows it to absorb all sorts of shock
This is the same type of shaft going into submarines they are building at his work

RE: Mr. Rover ate my U Joints
My propshaft had 2 main gouges... one was on the inside of the joint, and another on the outside.
I don't have pictures, and can't take any as it's back on the car (sorry)
The gouge on the inside is what makes the propshaft bad because there is not much holding the u joint still (keeping it from wobbling)
but I will get another 100000 miles off of it so I'm not concerned.

holy smokes. lucky, id say blessed. how could you not feel that driving? and if you did how did you go that long without attending to it. I changed my shaft at 55k, and it was pristine. they say they fail with no warning but id say lookingat that they are farmore durable that most would assume.
