Smile My electric fan thread

Here's a brief summary of my electric fan install.

about 4yrs ago, I noticed my fan clutch was wobbling, so I pulled it off, to find my waterpump bearing also loose, (not leaking yet)

My laziness is only overshadowed only by how cheap I am.

So I decided to replace the waterpump ($70 or so), & at the same time go electric.

I bought a 2speed 16" lincoln 5000cfm fan off of ebay, installed a DTSP (double throw, single pole) /center off switch under my dash near hood release.

This ties into (2) fused (30a)relays to batt.

Forward = hi speed, rear = lo speed but thru' 160deg elec. stat(probe in rad fins near return linefrom block), center = off.

After 6mos. or so, (working great) I found (running)the fan drew 19amps on low, 38amps on hi.

So I bought (2) 12" fans from summit (8amps ea.), mounted them 1/2" off rad, (no shroud)

One fan goes thru stat, the other goes thru old hi on switch, works great.

They are both mounted (stainless 1/4-20 bolts) to rad core support via (3) vertical pcs. of 1/4" x 1-1/2" alum stock I had.(fans diagonal)

I like it - I believe the waterpump's happy, it's not supporting a 5lb. rotating mass.

I think the engine jumps off idle quicker, the whole mess is quieter, allowing me to hear all the other noises.

luck,greg

Did you get any pics of the install and the finished product? I'm sure there would be quite a few people interested in doing the same. Did you notice any performance or mileage gains by getting rid of the engine driven fan? I have heard that on average an engine driven fan robs 16 horsepower that could be going to better use.

I looked into doing an electric fan conversion when I had my Disco and everyone I talked to who had an opinion said it wouldn't work. One guy even went so far as to try and explain all the physics of how an engine fan worked. He ended up sounding like an idiot rambling on about stuff that had nothing to do with the question. That was on Dweb of course.

Ok, I tried again, The pics are 2.7mb each. they will not load on this site.

sorry, over the past year: I've tried my ford fuel injectors, oil filter adapter for guage, my (3) ga. pod, my 2-1/2" side exhaust and my cooling fans with relays.

After I rest, I'll try another forum, let you know.LOL

Sorry, I'm not going to join another social network site just to post pics here, If this site loosened it's jpeg size limits, it wouldn't be an issue for me or others for that matter.

This is the only site of dozens that I frequent that takes 30seconds to load do to advertizing & phishing.

And that crap drives me nuts.

sorry guys

luck,greg
