Need help ASAP, the tach slowly stopped working
then while trying to get it home the srs and anti lock lights are coming on and off. The MPH also is not working. When I posted the other day I poster said my alternator was going bad and it would continue to get worse. Basically I am 30 miles from home now on an exit and need to get home... the car is running fine and I assume the alternator is dying.. Can I drive it another 30 and get it home and to the shop? Again the car is not overheating or anything
Turn off EVERYTHING that is not needed, radio, A/C, headlights, anything that takes electricity turn off. When you are at a stop light shift to neutral and use the parking brake to hold you in place (brake lights take power). Turn the HVAC blower off, everything needs to be off. The fuel pump and engine dont take that much electricity.
If you can charge it for a bit do that, if it dies you can jump start it and drive until it dies again.
Repeated running the battery dead will kill the battery.

Ok, got it back to the house, Spike555 thanks for helping, I should have listened to you and just fixed it at the first sign of the issue. Now that I have it back home and after I purchase from it from autozone what am I getting into? I have lots of experience with Audio/Video building racks etc so I know about wiring and I have sautered many a wire. I have faith in my abilities and want to try to do it myself. What all tools will I need? Also, will it be a plug and play situation? Take wires off unscrew a few things and then drop the other one in? I took a quick look a little while ago and it does not look too bad, easy to get to etc. I am not going to have to put new wires in or anything right? Again thanks a lot for the help, one of my goals for the next few years is to learn how to fix somethings in cars/SUVs as I think I could be pretty good at it with a few tries.
All you will need is a basic socket set with metric sizes as well as SAE.
Yes it is plug-N-play, if you can rack a sound system for a auditorium than you can do this.
The fan shroud has two latches, undo them.
First unhook the battery cables.
Take your ratchet and you will see a pully that just attaches to the engine block and there is a big nut in the middle, put your socket on it and loosen the belt, dont remove the nut, just push the pully until it loosens the belt, I dont remember which way it needs to go. And the fan, there are two blades with a bigger space than the rest so that you can fit a tool onto the pully. And the name of that pully is the belt tensioner.
The belt can just hang there, no need to take it off all the way.
Next remove the alternator.
Unhook the wires from the back.
You may need to change a few connections from the old alt to the new one.
Re-hook the wires, replace the alt, replace the belt, reconnect the battery cables and you are good to go.
Return the bad alt to AutoZone for your core charge (deposit).
I already posted a link to the correct belt routing for your trk, so once all is said and done double check the routing, if it is wrong your alt will not charge.
