Default Need more Horse Power

Hello lads,

I have a 1999 Discovery Series 1, with a 4.0 Litre gas V-8, auto transmission.

Even though the engine & the whole truck is in perfect condition, I still feel that it's underpowered.
I pull a 3000 lb. camping trailer around in the summer and the Rover just doesn't like it too much.
I notice that my clutch fan engages often while going up long inclines and she slows down quite a bit.

Is there an easier way to get more power than dropping in a whole new engine?

I would appreciate any comments on add-ons, engine swaps etc.

Cheers,

Tony

Simply put, these trucks are heavy and underpowered. Then you add the weight of a trailer behind it and make matters worse. Without costing more than the truck is worth the only thing you can do is live with it.

It's unfortunate but the only way to even see the slightest improvement (within significance) is to spend at least 5 grand or so.

Tony, to answer your question, "NO", there isn't any real big increase that can be done unless you build the engine or consider going to 4:11's.

If I had twice what my rovers worth I'd buy that. Could convert to electric cooling fans, might free up a few ponies

that sounds sexy...I can't help but wonder why nobody has put out headers for the DII...I mean, that would be easy money to design a pair of headers for the DII and have them CNC mandrel bent and welded...could make a fair amount of money doing it.

I know a simple way you can increase torque by 3.32:1...for free!

Make sure that you run the transmission is 3rd gear espcially when going up hill.
These trucks are underpowered bottom line.
However if you use full synthetics in EVERYTHING that will free up a few ponies.

I dont know how fast you are going but slowing down even 5mph will give you more room to play with.
I have found that 65 is a good speed to keep the engine in its power band without over working it.
