Default Need a quick response! Rear driveshaft?

99 disco II
Hi under the car and trying to figure out what happened. Either my gearbox blew or my rear diff is toast> fluid was honey clean w/no debris.
If you have the rear wheels jacked up and turn them should the rear drive-shaft move? Not running but shifted in any gear?
Thanks!

When in gear, yes rear driveshaft movement should cause movement to the rear wheels.

what about moving the tires should the drivshaft move? can not move the drivshaft by hand. car wont move or driveshafts wont move with car running or not running in any gear.
I thought my gearbox was toast but while looking at all the components I noticed I can spin my rear tires ( jacked up) and the drivshaft does not move at all. I would think it would spin from the u joints to the gearbox ????
Thanks!

It works both ways...while in gear, moving the tires should move the driveshaft. Not sure what's goning on with yours. Something in the diff? I'd call Disco Mike.

ok thanks! yea it would make sense that the drive shaft would spin to the transfer case when u move the tire (s) by hand. I thought maybe the transfer case had blown since I found one of the gears has sheared a little but who knows that could have been done by the P>O> .......but maybe the rear diff went, maybe it all went, Maybe i'll turn it into a big flower pot in the yard,,,,,,,? Either way the drive-shaft has to come out. Guess I'm taking out the t-case and tranny or re-doing the rear diff

Don't jump to conclusions. My knowledge is limited and only chimed in because you were short on time. It may not be that bad, so make sure you call DM or wait for other folks with more Rover know-how than I.

yea no problem......i pulled out both drive shafts and one of the cross-members so far is all. drained all the fluids and am still stumped. Tranny looks good, no debris and clean fluid which I changed a bunch. I/m not sure how the t-case is supposed to look. I Posted another thread w-pics but zero responses so far.

If you are rotating one wheel and both wheels are up in the air, the driveshaft will likely not spin. The other wheel should turn the opposite direction (unless you have a locker or some kind of LSD).
