Default New to Disco and Land Rover

Hi All,

I'm moving from BMW maintenance into rover maintenance, in other words.... I'm looking into buying a Disco II. I'm a garage mechanic who's not afraid to take on complex mechanical repairs (most of them), and I'm fairly well aware of what I'm getting into with these vehicles (for the most part, although I do love a surprise occasionally).

I found a few in the LA area and after trolling the forums here for a few days know sort of what to look for.

Question for you all, what would be reasonable to offer on this Disco II? '02 56k miles, clean with a carfax. Looks like a headliner repair, missing a headlight cleaner jet, and some bumper issue on the left rear.

I'm thinking $7500 tops.

or this one

'01 58K miles, but I know less on it's condition. Certainly not going to offer asking

Thoughts?

Going to see both tomorrow.

Thanks all!

First, what are you going to use it for, if you plan on doing a lot of wheeling, 02's do not have a locking t/case and traction is limited.

You can save a few more bucks by looking for cars for sale by owner rather than through a dealer. Chances are they gave that guy $4500 - 5k for the 02.

Lot's of Disco's being traded in these days because of gas prices, dealers drool over thinking they can still sell them high to someone who has not been to these forums.

At the very least look through Craigs List at the for sale by owner trucks and see what they are asking for what level of quality. Then look at the dealer adds, you'll see similar cars for way more money.

Thanks guys.

I'll be using it for utilitarian around town cruising about. not alot of off-roading apart from dirt roads.

I have checked craig's list the there aren't alot for sale out here. nothing with such low miles. I'm not looking to get into one with over 75k miles.

What are thoughts on reasonable offers if they check out?

Why are you afraid of buying one with over 75,000 miles?
After 80k most of the common problems have been taken care of.
I find it very hard to believe any car of that age is going to have less then 100k on it unless the odometer has been turned back.

.... either that or it sat for most its life, which isn't good obviously. I bought a '88 pathfinder a while back with 280k miles on it and people thought I was stupid but at 350k miles it is still running.

Point is if the maintenance is done right it will last a LONG time. Good luck with which ever one you pick.

I can tell you that a 2001 Disco II was sold at the Manhiem Auction on 3/21/2012 in SF Bay. It was Above Average Black in color and had 86000 miles and sold for $5300. So if you can find some dealer or used car dealer that will take you to the auction so you can buy one for yourself. I know that some dealers WILL NOT do it because they want to RAPE customers. But some will and charge you a fee of $500 plus all the fees the aution company charges. I would say the 2001 would not be worth more than 6500. But then you have to fiqure in doing the services, doing the repair on the bumpers and the lamps, plus any other little things
