As you can see, its my very first post. Im not car person, meaning I don't know much about them except to drive them

I bought a used Land Rover 2004 SE 2 months ago. It has 67K miles on it. Over all looks great. drives fine with the exception of below.

Two issues. One the dreaded ticking, which I was told was a "soft tick." The dealer told me they replaced the lifters before I got it and it didn't solve the issue and I just have to "deal with it." A Land Rover specialist told me it was the lifter rod/shaft that was doing it, but a remote possibility that it could be a slipped cylinder, which cannot be fixed. But he said if that was it it would be coming and going. Its ALWAYS there, until I put some gas on the pedal and then it goes away. I.e. the ticking noise is there when I start the car, when ist idle and when I drive slowly. Once I speed up it goes away, or at least, I can't hear it. It seems like its coming from the top of the engine, but I can pretty much hear it all over and around the engine.

I really just want to get rid of it, because its so freakin' annoying and I feel it cheapens the car.

Second issue is low sporadic tremors/shakes/vibrations when idle. Worse after the car is hot. No code has come on so I have no idea what it is, and the dealers don't know either, except they say its not normal. Another LR specialist told me to add Slick 50 to the car. However, I read that was not a good idea, but instead use zx1 extralube because it does not contain certain damaging chemicals. Now, I do NOT want to put anything in the car unless I know its not gonna hurt it. I did read really good things about the zx1 extralube. but it may not solve the idle tremors I am getting.

I have a 04 SE also and I think i have the same problems with mine.

 

Stay away from the dealer if you can help it. They're over-priced and under-skilled. They think that Check Engine Lights in these things means you need a new engine, and they can tell just by looking at it. It's crap, don't listen to them. Ticks in these things don't get cleared up by putting anything in the engine, unfortunately. I've tried everything, slightly thinner oils, thicker oils, engine flush products, etc. nothing worked. I currently have my engine apart to do a head gasket job ($7000 job at the dealer, if they don't charge you $10,000 to just replace the whole engine first!). About $300 to do it yourself. I think I may have found my problem when I got the valley pan off. I found that a cam bearing had fallen out of its journal and was rattling around on top of the cam. That may or may not be my problem but, I have no slipped liners. Everything else looks good in there as well so, if the tick isn't gone after removing the cam bearing, I would say that the piston skirts have probably collapsed and the pistons are now rocking in their bores at idle and that's what is causing my tick. But, I wont know until I get it all back together and run it again.
Tremors are NOT normal, I don't know why these idiots think that ticking and poor running are just "characteristics" of these engines because they're not. You may just need new plugs, and more importantly, wires! If you still have the grey, garbage, factory wires that could definately be the problem.
Also, I HIGHLY doubt the dealer did anything to your engine before you bought it. Not unless there was a $45,000 charge tacked on for "pre-sale repairs" or something lame like that, they don't do anything for free so I doubt anything was done. If there's a new valley pan gasket in there, the previous owner probably took it apart to try to figure out the tick or something like that. I'm sure it wasn't the dealer.

 

This same thing happened to someone else just the other day. Maybe try logging out and sign back in... Just a thought. Good Luck with your Rover!!!
