Spike, I hate to tell you, but that's utter nonsense. Have you actually seen, in person, an SD rack with the Armtek flooring? There's no way you loose even a 1/4 of the depth, much less 1/2.
I've had it on my rack for about 6 years and never regretted it in the least, and I use my rack a lot.

For the OP, there are always D1 owners looking for SD racks who can only find D2 racks. You might want to wait a while before cutting yours to see if you can find such a person to trade with.
The SD racks generally have a high quality coating and it will be expensive to get it recoated to the quality of the factory coating.

Just picked up a 04 safety devices LR Rack today. A couple hour's north of me. Threw it on and drove back home. Now the fun starts, prep, paint, lights, electric, flooring....Etc... I am getting ill just thinking about it...
