Hopefully the wise Disco people here can give me some sage advice that might help me save some cash and keep my Disco 2 running. I am not new to Discovery's but i haven't owned own for over 15 years. I had a 95 back in college. The thing was a wallet nightmare for a starving college kid, but I loved every minute of it. Sadly that Disco was totaled when I was tboned, but i always knew one day i would get another one.
Fast forward 15 years and I bought an 2004 HSE7 with 140xxx on the clock and the head gaskets replace at 80k. I was excited and already started buying lift kits and parts for it. including the inline thermostat kit and an ultragauge But after 2 months of ownership this disco is failing me.

Last week the thing would not start, Crank, Crank, Crank and Crank but no start. Towed it back to my house, and started research on the forums:
checked all fuses
checked plugs for spark
replaced Crank Position Sensor ( that was fun!)

All this and still the Disco is dead, cranks all day but wont start

Could this be a fuel pump problem? I was able to get it to turn over by spraying a lil bit of gas into the throttle body.
Is there an inline filter that i am not seeing?
$300 Atlantic British fuel pump, is there a cheaper option?

2003 D2 with SAI fuel pump is $50.00-65.00 all day long on Ebay. If it sputtered and ran with gas in the intake = Fuel related issue. Filter/Sock = part of fuel pump. No inline filter like a RRC/D90/D1.

 

Don't throw $$ at it yet, a little more diagnosis. Bad CPS turns off the injectors. Check fuel pressure on the fuel rail before replacing the pump. If you reach over the drivers side manifold runners you can feel the pressure test port facing rearward just under the runner arch. Unscrew the cover and connect the test gauge. You can rent one for free at Oreilly.

Are you sure you put the spacers on the CPS correct, have seen people put the spacers on first and then the cps which is incorrect. The correct order is cps first then spacers then nuts.

 

yeah i put the sensor on correctly. sensor, barrel spacers, nuts

what would be the next step if i have fuel pressure at the rails?

the only codes I had pop up before this was the downstream passenger side O2 sensor

 

If the CPS is dead you also would have zero spark and any starting fluid or fuel would do nothing and the engine would just turn over. Also verify the CPS is fully plugged in. Seen plenty in my day which sadly were not and a few of those were on $500.00 LR's which fired right up in front of the seller as soon as the $$$ traded hands.

 

98% sure the CPS does not run off spark, only fuel.

 

Fire fuel, and compression, all at the right times. I assume the engine has not suddenly lost compression, you said it will run with a little fuel squirted in it? Like actually run? that means it has compression and fire, just not fuel.

I would check the inertia switch and the security system. Assume the red light in the IC is not flashing fast indicating a security lockout? You can pop the injectors out, crank it and see if they are squirting but we know they are not. If they are not, you either have a bad CPS or bad ECU.

 

Also verify no fuses are bad. You can also swap the fuel pump relay with something else & test it all of which cost $0.00.

 

so yesterday and today i jumped the relay for the fuel pump, could here it running. tried starting the engine, cranks but no start. reached behind the plenum to check for pressure. not exactly sure what i was looking for. But i got a little bit of pressurized air but no fuel coming out. do i have to have the car in the on position before checking for pressure?

 

I'll get you a picture tomorrow. you need a gauge to check the pressure, it needs to be at least 50 psi. CHeck it with the relay jumped.
