I just finished installing a rebuilt 4.6 for my rover and it won’t Start. It turns over fine but won’t fire. I installed a new Bosch cps during the install and I’ll try to change out the cam sensor as it was a used one I had around. My scanguage says no stored codes. My other innova scanner also says no codes. Is there a way to force them to check things without the motor running? Do I need to borrow a better scanner?
im not sure if I’ve forgotten something but can’t see anything wrong. Any ideas let me know. Lol
if I can keep my eyes open I’ll try to switch out that cam sensor

 

The RPM signal is driven from the crankshaft position sensor. Set your scanner can monitor rpm as you crank the engine, if you don’t get a signal you know it’s the CPK. Good luck.

 

Did you press the inertia reset on the firewall?

 

I may be wrong about this, but I don't think you need a scanner for the CKPS tachometer test. Can't you just watch the tach in the instrument cluster while turning over the engine?

As P.T. Schram used to say, an engine needs five things to run - air, fuel, spark, compression and timing. (And yes, I understand a bad CKPS will kill fuel and spark.). Check fuel and spark first, of course.

 

During a normal start, my tach doesn't move until the engine fires (though maybe it moves if you crank for longer). Isn't the OBDII power cut during starting? Not sure how you'd be able to read it with a scanner.

 

I’m not getting any rpm on the scanguage or in the factory tach as I crank it over, it is a bad cps than? Even though it’s brand new?

 

Did you verify spark and fuel pressure at the rail?

 

I didn’t have a lot of time tonight to work on the truck but I don’t believe it’s getting any fuel. When I depress the schrader valve on the rail no fuel comes out. I tried the ether spray ever so lightly into the intake and it started to bark a bit. I don’t like using ether so I didn’t use much. Just wanted to verify spark.
I swapped fuel relay and checked fuse no change.
should I test for voltage at the pump? Jump the relay? What Sensor or input would not allow fuel?

 

I had to troubleshoot a no start condition recently. I wasnt sure if it was the fuel pump of crank position sensor ( i ended up replacing both). During key on the fuel pump should cycle very shortly. I believe it needs a reading from the CPS in order to continuously stay on.

 

I swapped in a used untested cps. No change. Kinda doubt I have 2 bad cps s. 1 new,1 used.
Im back home right now. I need to brainstorm what to check or try for the next time I get over there
