Default New Problem 03 Discovery

2003 Discovery, 54K miles. A little background, about 2 weeks ago the M &S light was flashing as well as the Gear Indicator. Figured it was the battery, since it was orginal and replaced it. No problems until today. My wife is in the car, about 150 miles from me and the M&S and gear indicator lights start flashing and the service engine soon light came on. First is it okay to drive with that light on? The M&S went off when she restarted, but the service engine soon light is still on. Is this light the same as a check engine light, I don't have the manual in front of me? Where should I start checking, I will check for codes once she brings it home. Any help would be great.
Thanks

It is ok to drive, but you need to get the codes read before we can do anything.

I cannot find that code. Are you sure you got it right? It is easy to mix up the numbers.

Have your alternator checked for proper voltage. When the voltage gets to low the transmission computer is the first to loose power and it will cause some of the problems that you have.
When you put a new battery in you delayed the inevitable. If the alternator is not putting out enough AMPs the old battery will act up right away, but a new battery will last longer because it is, well, new.
So go to AutoZone or someother place and have the alternator tested and then report back to us.

From anther source...

"My M & S lights were due to a faulty X Y Z switch on the transmission. This is the switch that tells the truck what gear you have selected."

You may want to check that component....

The xyz switch is the switch gear selctor, anyone know how to check it. Spike the alternator was tested, so it should be fine. Also this is intermitent, it does not happen all the time. This is the code description: P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input)

Willl this throw the p0705 code? Anyone had this issue before. There does not seem to be a way to test, just don't want to throw parts at. The switch is $200 at AB.
