Default Newb... 95-00 Disco Common Problems?

My beater car got stolen two weeks ago, and winter will be here at some point.

I have been looking at used 95-00 Discovery I's and II's. I see them get down to $4K.

1) Sooooo... If I may ask, what are the 4-5 most common high dollar repairs with these trucks? I'm wondering about stuff like the front transfer case, the engine, the transmission, and the electrical system.

2) Do these trucks have some sort of factory air suspension?

3) What did they cost new? I'm mostly looking at 97-98's.

4) Any other thoughts?

Thanks!!!!

What do you plan to do with a Disco if you buy one, how much money are you planning on spending and are you at all mechanical?

Winter daily driver for the most part, I am putting the Corvette away around Thanksgiving.

I can do stuff like plugs, wires, 02 sensors, fluid changes, and change basic hard parts like shocks and stuff, but beyond that I might try to get a friend to help out or I have a guy I use by O'Hare who is really good for big stuff.

I know from my old 1999 Tahoe, that (this is just a generalization) that a truck might go through transmissions, 02 sensors, and have the occasional need for a full set of brakes maybe even rotors. My concern is that the Disco goes through stuff like wires or junk like that. I'd hate to have to put a new control harness in it. What are your thoughts Mike?

Probably the most common problem with any year Rover has been head gaskets.
Wire harness have been fine, ABS brake system is a little too sensitive and can throw a warning light when there is no real problem occuring.
The tranny and t/case hold up pretty well, the vehicle in general tend to seep some oil, from any place, it is just their nature.
The vehicle are great 4wheelers, do well in the snow and off road. There are 2 models, a D1 which is the shorter and eariler built model and the D2 which came out in 99 when the D1 was dropped. The D2 has more bells and whistles, rides better and has the new Bosh engine system.
If you want more specific info, PM me with your tele # and I can call you.

That sounds like a good idea.

Are the trucks small v8's or something else? Doe the trucks loose headgaskets because they used crappy ones from the factory or the trucks overheat or have detonation?

I'm guessing that a new set of injectors is not a bad idea for a high mileage truck either.

Pro Stock John,

Disco Mike's advice is rock solid, and might I add that you should read my technical info sections at www.eurotekapg.com. The various sections talk about the problem areas to be aware of.

The Disco I is much easier for the DIY'ers, it has less to break.
More for off road the Disco I and the Range Rover classic and the Defender 90 share
the same drive train for the most part.

Hey Mike, thanks for your time on the phone, you are super helpful!

When I click that like I get a URL not found error message?

Mike, do you recall where you saw that low-priced 2001?

They found our stolen Civic, but it's probably in rough shape. I'll know today if we are going to be fighting insurance.

I'd like to hear a little more about what makes the D2s tougher for beginners? I imagine we're talking about stuff like the ACE.

Thinking of systems that might break on the trail, which systems can be disabled in order to limp home, and which are likely to cause a catastrophic stuck?

I'm sure if you are looking to do a lot of offroading, you'd want to basic tools and have an idea of what could get damaged. Do the D1 and the D2's have belly pans, and something covering the oil pan?

We have not heard back from State Farm yet.
