Default Newb question #12,859...

Hey everyone, doing the "I got my new Disco and I'm changing all the fluids" job today and I have a question about changing the tranny fluid. So I see the drain bolt and then the bolt where the new fluid goes in above it, although the manual says capacity is around 10qts after draining completley I only got 3 qts into the tranny before it started to pour out of the hole - I'm willing to concede that some is still in the torque converter but only 3 qts? Granted I'm sure 10qts didn't come out when I drained it either but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missng something.

Oh, when I first crawled under the truck I actually removed the big bolt first instead of the drain bolt because I wanted to add some tranny flush first before fully draining, well if the tranny fluid was at or below the bolt hole line then it would have drained a little bit or nothing at all - but tranny fluid actually drained for quite awhile , so the question is how did the po get all of that fluid in there, above the fill hole?

Just slap me if this seems retarded.

When I drained mine it was about the same, about 3 qts came out. I'm not sure what two plugs you are reffering to. I didn't notice a fill plug on mine, it could very well be there I just didn't notice it. I have always filled my tranny through the dip stick tube. I added a quart of Lucas tranny magic to mine and i'll tell ya, it took awhile for that goop to go down the tube It's like 6o weight oil.

Fill the fill hole. Start the truck and fill through the hole again. Shift through all of the gears NOT MOVING. get back under and fill until a 2MM bead of fluid is running out and put the plug back in.

Has to be filled running

Thanks, so run through the gears after filling, stop, repeat fill process again, run through gears again until...8-10qts have been gone through or the fill hole spills out meaning its full.

You can't get all the fluid out without doing a power flush if i'm not mistaken.

And each time you cap/shift/drain, you'll be losing some new fluid. Impossible to get all the old stuff out via the drain plug.

You won't get all of it out through the drain plug, I was just saying you didn't get it all back in there. It has to be running while you fill.

Fill while running, put the plug in, shift through all of the gears, take the plug back out, and try to fill again. Should be full when a 2 MM bead of fluid comes out, then put the plug back in. Keep the truck running the whole time while doing this.

Repeat this process again in another few hundered miles, then again in another few hundred and you should have mostly new fluid.
