Newbie Disco 1 Questions
As someone in the market for a Land Rover Discovery, I was wondering what tips you experienced Disco owners had for someone who is new to 4wd ( I own a 1999 Firebird). I am looking in the 6-7k price range and would like to know what I should look for when purchasing a disco. I plan to purchase within the next few weeks. Some questions I had were:
- What are the major differences between from 1996 to 1999(series 1)?
- Are the stock stereos wired to accept the 6cd changer?
- What options do you find especially useful on your disco?
If you have answers to any of these questions of just want to make a comment, please feel free to do so. I am excited to be joining a new board (moving from firebirdv6.com) and look forward to getting to know you all.

RE: Newbie Disco 1 Questions
I'll try my best...
1 - in 97, they lost the distributor. Other than that I don't know that too much changed. I am sure they did, I just don't know what.
2 - if the stereo has a cd button, the wiring harness is there.
3 - I have an SD, so not too many bells and whistles. I do like the steering wheel controls for cruise, and radio controls on the dash right behind the wheel. That said, it's what I am used to having. I pulled more people out of the snow this past winter than I ever have (more snow too), and I pulled a truck out of a water crossing that was about 20 seconds from being washed away... I like knowing that mine is not included in the "most SUV's" comment on the weather channel.
Good Luck on your buy and welcome to the forum.

RE: Newbie Disco 1 Questions
The 96 is the last year to have the antenna is on thae fender.
All other have it in the rear right side window.
My brother had a 98 SE 50th Anv, I have a 96 SE7, his had wood grain dash leather heated seats,
mine are leather but not heated.
That was the only difference. The (7) adds rear AC and two rear seats.
With the Disco II on the way Land Rover started to load up on all the extras at no charge.

RE: Newbie Disco 1 Questions
I have had a 94 Disco for some time now. I love the classic look and lines the Disco has it will always look good. Look for locking differential it will save you off road. They get bad gas mileage and dont have an abundance of power, but are well built they need some TLC. When they are given regular maintance they are reliable. I have had a few buddies buy D2 and wished they had D1 because they had problems with them and they were not as good off road. No Locking diffs and longer wheel base. Good Luck
