Rocker arm shaft bolts loose????? Has there been any engine work done recently?....Dan

I purchased the truck non-running. The previous owner said the timing chain needed to be replaced. I removed the value covers on the left side and could see the rockers moving so i figured it was not the timing chain.

You're not going to know until you pull the head off. (and since it a Rover you might as well pull both of them.:rolleyes:)

It very well might need a timing chain...if the chain or gears have worn to the point of slipping a cog or twenty, then the valve/piston event timing can be all jacked up. I don't know yet ( I'm new to owning a Discovery II with a 4.0 V8) if this engine is an interference engine in this event or not. Meaning do the valves and piston actually touch should the chain , gear, or cam actually break. If it is an interference engine and they do touch the normal happening is the valve gets bent then can never seat so no compression.
You say the valves move so more than likely nothing is completely broken but it may be worn badly. Some disassembly will be required to determine that......Dan

You need to star tearing down the engine, neither a rocker shaft or timing chain will cause what you have.

I started pulling the heads today and got down to removing the head bolts before it got to dark to work. I did notice that a couple of the bolts where extremely easy to remove and the two outside ones on the inside of the head where very hard to remove. I will finish getting off the heads after work and report my findings.

take note of the head gasket when you pull the head
