Default OBD2 Code 0441 03Disco

Hi guys,

I'm in need of a urgent bit of information.

I just failed my CA smog check because of an evap system function. That was surprising to me because I plugged my obd2 in before going and got a green light and no codes. Surprising again, I was driving away from the smog check center my CEL came on and reads P0441.

I replaced my fuel cap with an aftermarket product but the issue remains.

This is new territory for me.

Any help is appreciated. If I can repair the problem in the next 24 hours they will re-smog for free. Otherwise I'm out another $55.00.

Thanks, Michael Wm Gould

I haven't smoked the system yet, but did find a size-able crack as seen below.

The MAF is upstream of the crack and the purge flow valve leads to the throttle body- just downstream from the crack. I'm thinking the initial data from the MAF may be corrupted by the influx or outflow of air through the crack and generating a 0441 (incorrect purge flow) code.

It actually looks like the crack has been repaired before.

EVAP systems are totally foreign to me. Searched the web, but didn't find any real direction.

Any advise is welcomed and appreciated.

Just my guess.... That issue could pop the light, but not for that code. You have an EVAP code correct?? Seems to my that that kind of leak would make differences in the MAF circuit. Leaking unmetered air to the throttle body. The purge for the EVAP is on the drivers side of the motor, in the back, just beneath the upper intake maifold. try to see if you have an evap vaccum leak from the lines there.

Everything looked good to and from the evap valve.

I too have had an occasional 0441 code but it always cleared itself with a full tank of fuel.

Follow up to P0441.

Thanks Discomike for your advise. As always it's appreciated.

I repaired the crack in the tube junction with a 5 min epoxy compound for plastics. Surprisingly, the epoxy bonded both materials well. I re-installed the tube the next day and immediately noticed an improvement in the stability of the engine. It idled better at low rpm and sounded sweet. Having a correct air flow does make a difference.

The best part (so far). My CEL turned off within 10 minutes of driving.

I returned to the smog center and the LR passed CA emissions. Nothing bad appeared in the system.

I'm not completely convinced that the P0441 was popped because of the cracked junction, but for now to seems plausible. Some LR things are fun to work on, vapor recovery just doesn't grab me! Keeping the fingers crossed.

I just wanted post a followup note:

It's been about two weeks and I've burned 3 tanks of fuel and the P0441 has not re-appeared.

Personally, if this was mine, I would replace with a new one. The crack is at the junction where the idle speed control valve intakes air past the throttle and into the manifold, controlling your idle. I am surprised that you did not have other codes. I bet your idle quality was horrendous. DISCOs are tough...I am glad it passed. Thanks to Discomike.
