Default Off Road Light Wiring

I did not see it mentioned anywhere specifically, and electrical is not my strong suit anyway.

If I am hooking up more lights, do I need a relay? Or can I just install a switch in the dash and run the wires through the firewall to the battery and the lights? Or, does it make sense to try and run through the fuse box under the hood?

I know it should be a simple installation, which is probably why there is not much posted. Any particular wiring kits people recommend?
Thanks in advance.

I would not tap into any existing electrical when adding additional lighting or accessories. Most lights come with an option to buy a wiring harness that includes a relay and switch (don't have to use their switch). If only adding one or two of these harnesses it can be installed cleanly. If you plan on having lots of accessories or lights I strongly recommend purchasing a solution ie Switchpro (super pricey but very very nice. I run a knock off 6 switch panel off of amazon and have had zero issues). Something like a Switchpro is simple and elegant to install that anyone can figure out imo with a little patience.

Run your own wiring harness and to be perfectly honest if you are 100% new to wiring up stuff just go to Walmart or Amazon and grab a 2 light wiring harness. It's like 15.00 and comes ready to just route, connect, and use. Last thing you want to do is tap into the OEM harness wrong and cause a fire or a total electrical nightmare for many many years to come.

@redrover you should always use a relay and dedicated wiring & fuses. If you are going nuts with lights it is a little more complicated as noted by @whowa004 .

If you stick with LED's you have less electrical draw which helps

Here is a link to the switchpro knock off on amazon

I’m the guy who probably went more overboard but what I build is working excellent and allows me to modify for change of accessories when I want

Do it the right way make sure the setup is expandable you know you’ll eventually add more lights. I made the mistake and had to rip it all out cause I had a bunch of those off-road light switch wiring kits from Amazon it got out of control. Take the time and watch YouTube videos learn it’ll pay off

That is fantastic. I think I am just going to wire it up with the switch that comes in the kit and find the right parts to put it in the blank spot by the existing light switches. There is a youtube w Ed from WheelerDealers doing this, he skips a lot, but that is exactly what I need to do.

Thanks for the replys.

If you intend to tie it into your wiring so that it only works when the ignition switch is on, then use a relay to tap into a "switched" power source. This will trigger the relay, which will turn on the thicker power source wire to your off road lights. You can run the power source wire direct to the battery with an appropriate sized inline fuse.

You can get a D2 Cruise control switch and use it for your Aux Light switch as it's a locking switch.
