Offroad tool list D2 specific
Everytime I go off road or camping etc, I learned to take my tools. Now I always bring too many and wanted to make a list to reduce the load.
This list is assuming oem hardware sizes and is for tools only to keep you wheeling.
What would you say we’re missing? What would you say we could leave out?
I think it’s best if we break it down by sections…see below.
Suspension and axles
13mm multipoint socket
24in breaker bar
3ft pry bar
15-23mm sockets
18-24mm wrenches
10mm socket
1/2 drive ratchet
3/8 drive ratchet
4mm Allen key
32mm and 36mm socket
short and long extensions
bottle jack
Engine bay
15-18mm sockets 3/8 drive
15-18mm wrenches
7-13mm sockets 1/4 drive
ratchets for above
breaker bar
Extensions
Phillips bit and driver
Electrical
10ft 16 & 18 gauge wire
wure stripper or really sharp knife
electrical tape
butt connectors
Interior
e14 socket
t25, t15, and Phillips bits
driver for above bits
3/8 drive ratchet

@The_OGCJR Go the other way look at your truck, what can you realistically fix on the trail.
I carry a:
I am often out of cell range, and 120+ miles in the bush , I accept what I can do trail and keep my truck in good shape.
I carry a:
- small socket set, with a few additional sockets, a breaker bar, 1/2 drive ratchet
- Fan clutch tool
- A #2 phillips, a few torx screwdrivers
- Electrical tape and wire
- a few bits of hose of various sizes, and rad hoses (used ones but they will get off the trail)

I carry much less, but never go wheeling alone and never that far from the road. However you make some reasonable assumptions regarding trail repairs. Starters, alternators, CPS, accessory pulleys, driveshafts and radiator fan all have predictable lives and should be replaced before risking a larger off-road expedition. Less predictable are fuel pumps, differentials, axles, flexplates, torque converters and transmissions. People have broken diffs and axles but that usually involves extreme wheeling. Flexplates and transmissions rarely fail suddenly but if they do that is a long tow out. Suggest you think harder about what the vulnerable bits on your rig area. I have previously posted normal D2 component lifetimes, recommend you review them: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...-04-d2-118597/
