who can perform the diesel conversion in the states? With the gas prices the way they are, I'm beginning to think this is a realistic option.

RE: Poor Gas Mileage
I too have suffered from lousy gas mileage. I have averaged 12.5 mpg almost every single tank full since I bought the car new in 1995. About a year ago, a friend of mine told me to try Lucas additive for my gas. First tankfull I saw 14.6 mpg. I currently average about 14.3 mpg since switching over, which at today's fuel prices effectly nets me about 15cents/gallon savings due to the better mileage.
As for diesels, I too would love to get one. The only people I know actively doing conversions were in VT or CT. They offered the 300Tdi or a 2.9L cummins diesel conversion as options.

RE: Poor Gas Mileage
You gas prices are still way way cheaper than ours here, it will not be long before we will be paying £1 per litre.. we are already at the 82p to 84p per litre now, and still going up. They are saying we will hit 90p per litre by the summer of this year.
3.785litres = 1 gallon
£3.18 per Gallon
1.84 dollars to the £
current price for me is $5.85 going up to $6.25 maybe by the summer time, if they are right about the 90p per litre...

RE: Poor Gas Mileage
lightning, you really need to move to an oil producing west texas of 2.15 (approximately) per gallon.
so 4 pounds per 3.785 liters, or
1.05 pounds per liter. (if i did my math right, which i think i did since i used my cell phone as a calculator)
minimaniac, get off of the throttle and i'll bet that gives you a couple miles per gallon, its a land rover, not a mustang gt. lol
i do know at least one math equation:
LR mpg < GT mpg
in my case, LR= 20, GT= 25 (both values are highway miles)
freelander 2.5 liter, 24v dohc, 174 hp, 5 speed auto about 5000 lbs
mustang 5.0 liter 16v ohv 215 hp, 5 speed stick, about 3400 lbs
mustang has twice the motor and more gas mileage with old technology motor. ths tells me the land rover his low speed rear and front end for off road use. mustang high speed rear end for good mpg. also, keep in mind, a car is much lighter than a SUV
SE 3.66:1 rear and front end gear ratio
GT 3.27:1 rear end gear ratio
these would be major contributing factors

In regards to gas mileage, additives, etc. . .
According to the owners manual, you should only put in Premium, and no additional additives.
I'm curious if people have had any problems with using mid-grade or refular fuel, or if there is any problem with using additional additives. I want to protect my engine as much as I can, but I'd also like to protect my pocket book . . .

Many of the U.S. Land rover buyers (at least those not in it for the status symbol) would buy the tdi if it were an OEM option when buying the vehicle.
Finding a shop that can do a conversion is tough. Last time I looked at it, it was going to cost around $13,000 US to get it done. You could get the engine for around $5,000 (when you can find it) and the fit kit for about another $2,000. Then it was going to cost you another $6,000 in labor. My guess is that the total cost is probably closer to $17,000 now.
