The Defender is the same drivetrain and suspension as a D1 so whatever mods were necessary to put portal axles under a Defender will also be necessary on a D1.

I imagine that would be relatively little since the Defenders used by British military have portal axles. They're called the Wolf and from my understanding are essentially beefed up Defenders. Hard for me to say though since I don't know much about this stuff yet, just wanted to chime in and say it sounds like a cool idea. Keep us posted if you decide to go ahead with it.

my buddy just bought a unimog and im in love with the portals i know its kind of wrong to put Swiss axles under a rover but hell it has a Buick motor, among other odd pieces already.

Volvo's should fit nice now all i need is to source some out.

allot harder to find then mog 404's

There is a company in North Salt Lake, UT that makes new portal axles. They put them on rock crawlers and what not.

Hi,

still interested in portals for your Disco? We are currently fitting newly developed bolt-on boxes to my Defender 130CC...

So long,

Robert

Unless they are some one off modifications, the Wolf's don't have portal axles.

That´s just what I was about to write.
There are no military Defenders with portals in use and I don´t think there are any "one off´s" either as that wouldn´t be permitted due to spares availablity.

The above bolt-on portals (build by www.killeraxles.com) are fully interchangeable, fit any side and any axle, require minimal welding and will just as well fit on a Disco.

I guess we´ll have my rig ready by mid February and then I will finally be able to give her a real shake down.

So long,

Robert

Oilworker what did you pay for those portals? That looks like a killer set-up!
