Portland Oregon Rover wars
#23
I've had great luck with PDX Rovers and used them exclusively until about a year ago. I live an hour south of the city and the drive was getting to be a drag. I discovered Fleet Service Northwest in Hubbard. Rob, the owner is awesome. Kind of a quiet, unassuming chap, but he's a virtual walking LR encyclopedia and his rates are dirt cheap! (Cheap relative to LR mechanic rates, anyway). Both shops have been great and are highly recommended. The only knock I would give PDX Rovers is that Francis, the founder moved to Bend and is no longer directly involved and his son Terry has moved on to other pursuits so it lost a little of the friendly family atmosphere it once had. Hope this helps.

RipD,
The guy's name is Rob, not Brian. My bad. He is primarily a Ford diesel shop, but he's also a certified Rover mechanic. He's also very free with his knowledge. He'll do the repair if you want, but if you want to tackle it yourself he'll tell you how to do it at no charge. He's kind of the best kept secret in these parts.
Anyway, I've had very good luck with him.

Francis and PDX Rovers now PDX British are a con game. I have my P-38 in a local shop after my o rings blew out for the third time. The first time francis told me had repaired it and then it happened again. This time the rig was towed by Francis to his Portland shop. I got it back two weeks later with an alleged new heater core. BS! My heater/cooling system guy here in Salem is working right now to repair and replace the crap PDX Rovers did.
The o rings had blown again so the new repair guy calls me to take a look at what he found under there. An aftermarket heater core, no O-rings period, just a massive amount of silicone, tape and plastic ties. The metal heating lines had been cut and put back together with rubber glue.
Backing up a bit, I took to court a few years ago and won a $4000 judgment against him. He had my rig in for repairs, told me it needed a new thermostat, then it was a new water pump, then a new radiator and finally after all of that, a new head gasket!! Found out they had put 3000+ miles on my rig driving it around Portland and to Bend and back all the while telling me they were working on it but it had not yet been repaired. Stupid me!! I go to court and win and collect my money by going to the bank with the court order.
At this point I order another motor, file paperwork against PDX Rovers again so they will pay for my engine R&R. I did not blow the motor up so the was no reason for me to pay. In the meantime I found a diary that Terry (son of Francis) had kept. Still have copies of it. Interesting reading to say the least.
We go to court, Francis is there and then tells me in front of that we worked it out, he would pay for the replacement free of charge. Oh, and a cop comes in demanding the book I was going to present as evidence against Francis and PDX. Little did they know I had already made copies. Look story short, the new engine get delivered to PDX Rovers and three weeks later I get a call that it is done.
I go to pick it with a member and I told her to get into it and meet me elsewhere. I did so because I knew that some kind of scam was going to be played. I was correct, I was presented with a $2000 bill for the engine R&R. I told that it was to be free according to an agreement made in court before a judge. I was told too bad. take them to court again. I called the cops although the truck was gone already, they came in, looked at my court papers and off I went.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!!! By the way, he also liked to blame his wife for all of his problems rather that himself.

Boeing Boeing (or anybody else), any any info on this place? Their web page looks like they're a Ford diesel shop.
they do good work there as does Elite motors in Salem. In Portland I the Jag Shop on East Burnside is also good.

I used in live in Portland (aka Vancouver, WA across the river). I am not familiar with Ships Mechanical either. But I am not inferring they are not a good shop. Just have not heard about them in the past.
There are other popular shops in the area such as Green Oval, Green Dog, PDX Rovers, etc. I work in the truck manufacturing industry and manage dealers. Feel free to send me a PM if you would like to know of my personal recommendation.

Tell that to a couple of people I know who I recommend to Green Oval how they feel about the service there. One was given a $1500 quote and was given a $3700 bill, with work they told me was unauthorized. Doug did the same to me way back pre-2006 when my wife was still alive. I will give him credit that he helped me sell my old Classic but he could not work on my P-38 at the time. He did not have the software for it. In fact, a guy from Land Rover Portland who was a buddy of Doug's stopped by his shop with "borrowed" equipment and the software needed to see what was going on with the rig.
As to greendog, not even sure they are still around and IMHO, a couple of clowns missing from a village in Texas.I agree that Shipping does do Xlt work also.
