Default Power Steering Pump Issues

Hey Guys,

So my power steering pump **** the bed last week @ 105k miles. Must be the cold that was the last straw. Puked out all the power steering fluid on my driveway.

Anyway, I got an Allmakes pump from Justin at Lucky 8 which I put in this afternoon. It went smoothly, I followed the You Tube video from Atlantic British.

I filled it up with Royal Purple PS fluid, and it's still making that god awful whining noise it made went the OEM pump died last week! I don't see any leaks, and the fluid is spinning around inside the reservoir.
.
The only thing I didn't do was bleed the system. AB doesn't mention it in their video, so I didn't do it. Could that be the problem? Or something more sinister (like a defective pump or a broken steering box)?

Thanks guys!

Andy

" The only thing I didn't do was bleed the system"

Start there! These pumps make all kinds of funky sounds until you get the air bubbles out.

So true

Let it idle and keep topping the pump off. when it is full turn the wheel lock to lock. As you do this the noise should go away.

The pump He ordered is an OEM PR2 pump and we have had excellent success with them.

You'll get it, the odds of a bad pump is VERY low. Easy to get that WTF feeling when you put in a new part and you get noise. This will be air.

When you bleed the air and you have someone turning the wheel lock-to-lock you need to open the bleed screw on the top of the PS Box. Makes life a lot easier and gets this done fast. Only one thing don't hold full lock for more than 5 - 10 SECONDS (RAVE has 10 sec max>LOOK @ STEERING - Adjustments- Hydraulic System Bleed).

Have at it.

Ok so I bled the pump several days ago. The groaning is still present, along with less power steering assistance, but only after a cold start, and it only lasts for a couple of minutes, then everything is normal.

Any ideas??

Thanks!

Andy

I ran 3 bottles of Royal Purple through the system when I bled it. And when the old pump expired, all the fluid leaked out, so the system is full of new fluid currently.

I've bought quite a few things from you guys and have always been pleased. Just got my Disco back up and running after replacing a bunch of things. The power steering pump was one of the items I replaced and it worked for a few short drives. Now it seems to have stopped assisting in steering. In trying to trouble shoot it I noticed the fluid was no longer swirling in the reservoir so I'm assuming the pump has failed. I assumed I'd purchased from you guys but looks like I took the cheap way out for one from eBay.

So I'm considering buying one of the 2 you guys have for the non TD5's and before purchasing, I'm wondering (1) if fluid is not swirling then is the pump bad or could it be that it's not been bled enough (don't think that's the issue, usually makes that awful sound if it's low or needs bleeding) and (2) if I need a new pump, which of the two do you recommend? I'm assuming the OEM one.

Look forward to hearing back, thanks for the help!!
