Default Premium fuel question

Hi all wondering since rover bought an old Buick motor etc for its discovery backin the day at what point did they decide to use premium in there engines or was the Buick already set up for premium i herd g m only ran them for about six yrs.

It has nothing to do with Buick or the block, its about the ECU managing the fuel injection and timing with input from the MAF, 02 sensors, and knock sensors.

I know what makes it work wondering why Land Rover made it so they used premium and not 87

my understanding is that these engines tend to run dirty and carbon up. the Premium fuel was an attempt to slow that process. i don't remember where i came across this info and could be mistaken.

@britguy Emissions mostly I would think, also different Octane measurements we actually only need 91. You get "better" performance and mileage and a cleaner engine using 91.
