trust me you have to take it out, unless you want to have deteriorated foam and glue embedded into every inch of your vehicle. I already posted what I used look back some.

take the headliner out
take it out into the yard
peel the cloth off
take a dry scotch brite rub the loose foam off
then use a wet one to get the rest of the sticky ***** off
paint it with the kilz stain blocking primer
if there is still chunks of crap in the paint sand them off when primer drys
clean it back off
paint with satin paint, or a scrubable flat if you want
put it back in

remember a good paint job is all about doing the prep right, get it as clean and smooth as possible before you paint.
I hope these are enough steps for you to get the job done.

well over the weekend i got my headliner done... i was gonna shoot it with some high build automotive primer and smooth it out completely but my compressor crapped out... so i used some rattle can primer/filler and sanded it down some... since my compressor was a no go i couldnt use my air sanders so its not as smooth as i wanted, then i coated it with a few coats of black... whole truck smells like spray paint, awesome... and i also ran new wires to all my speakers since i had the headliner out of the way... i will take some pictures this afternoon and post them in the morning...

Sweet, another PAINTED headliner. We are starting a new trend! Forget fabric!

The headliner on my 03 is sagging and I love the idea of painting it with the color matched to my cloth! While I have it out I may line the underside of it with that peel and stick insulating/sound deading material. I'd do this part to try and block some of the scalding Georgia sun this time of year. Thanks for the pics everyone, experience is priceless and fortunately this time you guys have been there before me!

so anyone else like the idea of a chalkboard headliner? And are there any foreseeable problems with using that paint?

the main reason i didnt do it is because with my particular set of friends my entire roof would be covered with "rocketships"

I had the headliner on my 2001 DII replaced today. It looks great. Went with an OEM style headliner, sorry paint boys, What a wonderful change. It looks like a new truck. $225 at Jim's Auto Upholstery in San Diego. I highly recommend the shop, clean, fast and efficient. Phil
