Default Rear Bumper replacement question...

How hard is it to transfer the PDC sensors from my stock bumper to an aftermarket steel bumper? My bumper got hit the other day and I am in the process of shopping for a steel bumper. The only catch is that I have the back up sensors and I want to continue using them. I have two children... and pets to worry about.

Thanks-

I have never seen anyone ask this before, but I would think you should be able to swap the sensors over, just may want to keep them at the same height and angle.

I got the sensors off. They twist and release from a spring loaded back attached to a wire loom. The hole is ~1-1/16" but I'm sure it's probably metric versus my measurement. What is the best kind of drill bit to use cutting a hole in a steel bumper? Any advice on how to get the exact hole measurement? I sent an email to Atlantic British.

I like the "step" style drill bit (kinda looks like a beehive). Holesaws make a pretty ragged cut. Why not just measure the holes in your old bumper with a caliper (digital ones are really cheap unless you get a Starrett or something like that) http://www.xump.com/science/Hawk-Dig...rs.cfm?SID=126

I'm pretty sure Rovers North sells "Proline" steel rear bumpers compatible with the rear sensor option for around $500. I've seen them in the magazine once, not sure if this one is the one I saw or not. Just give them a call and see what they got. Their located in Vermont and the contact phone is: 1-802-879-0032

I found the correct hole size... 27mm. I will need to purchase a bi-metal hole saw to cut the holes. It is not as complicated as I thought it would be. The sensor eyes push out and turn to release from the spring loaded back piece (male/female notched part). It's a two part sensor. The wire loom unplugs at each sensors etc which are channeled at the bottom of the plastic stock bumper being held in place by metal clamps that pull right off.

Uni-bit/ step bit is your way they sell them in metric sizes. Start a pilot hole and then use the uni-bit and push lightly (let the tool do the work) it will cut a very nice hole for you.

So how did the retrofit go? I have a stock bumper with backup sensors and want to purchase a stronger aftermarket bumper but don't want to loose the sensors. Would love to see a photo if you have one. Thanks.

Was this ever achieved? I'm currently about to attempt the same.. move PDC sensors into a steel bar (when it arrives).

I put the sensors in a stock plastic replacement bumper when I broke mine a long time ago. (non 03/04 bumper, so no sensor holes...and plastic not metal, but shouldn’t be much different should it?)

It was as simple as drilling the right sized hole in the right spot. Then whatever doo-hickey mounted behind it, I put back there, stuck it on, snapped it in.

With the metal, drilling, you’ll have to corrosion protect /prime / paint the hole you drill and make sure not to “walk” the drill around to ruin the finish of your nice new bumper. But it should be possible. I remember having to use sikaflex or something to stick on the bracket that was on the interior of the bumper.
