Default Rear lug nuts are too big for factory lug wrench and no sockets fit

My front lug nuts are 27mm and the included lug wrench fits them fine.

On the two rear wheels which look identical (and the lug nuts/lug nut covers look the same as well), the factory lug wrench does not fit. I measured them with a digital micrometer and they measure approximately 27.5-28.5mm.

Wondering if they have just been abused by some air wrench hack (it took a 4 foot pipe on my 1/2" breaker bar to get the front nuts off),...or if there is some special wrench.

I have a pretty complete tool set,.....and I go from 27mm (which fits the fronts) to 30mm. Do I need to find a 28 or 29mm socket (if such a thing exists) or is there something wrong (damage?) with the rear lug nuts/covers.

Suggestions?

If the factory wrench doesn't fit, I'd be willing to bet they were abused by some dufus with an air wrench (abuse is common, although the result is the lugs would require a smaller socket rather than a bigger one), or they are some sort of crappy after-market lugs/covers that are just plain not the right size. Either way a visit to Sears for a socket, or a tire shop for removal are your options...

I keep a 24" breaker bar and 27mm socket in the trunk for tire changes, the factory iron doesn't give enough leverage. I also coat the wheel studs and the back of the rim with Anti-seize to keep things from "welding" together.

same thing happened to mine when i tried to get them off for the first time, could not get the 27 to fit all of them. Seemed like the "outer shell" of the lug nut had expanded or something. Assuming this was the case I took a hammer and beat the hell out of the socket onto the lug nut till it had enough bite to break it loose. Getting them out of the socket took a bench vise and air hammer. those are now holding my spare on. sucks b/c they are like $12 new...each! Good luck

It did. Because the nut under it is rusting.

Spray the lug with Liquid Wrench, hammer your socket on, make sure you use only a 6 point socket.
Loosen the lug nut, remove socket.
Move onto the next one.

One wheel (all 5 lugs) are 28mm..... they dont look abused or anything. the rest are 27.

Oh well.. i just bought a spare 28mm socket and a breaker bar so i can change that tire if needed on the road. im not going to sweat it till i have money to waste on new lugs. but like i said, nothing looks bent. almost feels like a manufacturing defect

Default I understand completely...

I have 5 out of the 20 that are just beat to bloody hell...I use a 25 in. breaker bar and a 27mm socket for the 15 good ones (factory lug nut wrench bent sideways )...for the 5 that are beat to bloody hell, I use a Gator-Grip® socket: gator-grip

I seem to remember a post a long time back that mentioned a factory LR or aftermarket lug nut that will fit on a 16 or 18 inch factory aluminum wheel without the stainless steel "cover" that gets beat to bloody hell. I'm pretty sure it was not a steelie lug nut.

Default Same problem here

Yeah, I just found out all the lugs on my rear wheels of my D1 won't quite fit the 27mm lug wrench either...and they also get mangled up quite easily too. I'm guessing there's an aftermarket option for these lugs and they suck.

I just got 10 used replacements in the mail from another forum member. Check out all the classifieds on the forums and post that you're looking for some, I bet you can get a lot sent to you for much cheaper.

And if nobody finds you any in the classifieds, try will tillery or paul grant or pt schram before buying new. They are just lugs.

Try a 12 point socket (27mm I'm pretty sure), it worked great for me. I had a few lug nuts I couldn't get my wrench onto until I tried a 12 pnt. It worked so well I regret even bothering to replace those lug nuts.

Yes, 12 point sockets sometimes work on damaged lug nuts but don't use them on lug nuts that are not damaged because they will end up damaged.
