Hi i have been trying to remove the fan clutch to get the water pump out. I have seen videos like this that are simply full of crap he had to of had it loose prior I rented this kit from autozone OEM/2 pcs. fan clutch wrench set (27018) | Fan Clutch Wrench | AutoZone.com

I placed the larger wrench on the bolts on the water pump Then i placed the 36mm wrench on fan clutch nut and have one person hold the larger while i whack the wrench to the left while standing in front of motor. The kit was brand new in plastic not used.

We have tried pb blaster i even placed a large bar on the 36mm wrench for more leverage and still no go. We have replaced and pulled the clutch fan over 2 years ago and that time it took over 3hrs to get it out, but now my issue is the wrench is Starting to slip and strip the nut.

What are my options of getting this POS out to get this water pump replaced? Also the belt is on. it just slips when turning

I cant find a long 36mm wrench in my area anywhere which is super odd.

 

I used an adjustable wrench on mine. I forget what size. One I tried was a little to thick and had to go down a size to the smallest that would still open up enough...maybe a 10" maybe 12"? I then held it from turning by placing a large, very large, like 20" screwdriver between the bolts holding the pulley on and the main shaft or maybe just between two of the bolts. (I don't recommend using a screwdriver, better to use the correct tool to keep it from turning) then I whacked the wrench with a dead blow hammer or large rubber hammer. I took two off recently, one was easy the other was a knuckle buster. better to have two people, one to hold whatever you have wedged in there to keep it from turning and the other to hold the wrench in place while hitting it. I did not have any help and was not easy trying to hold everything in place. If you go this route be sure to have the adjustable wrench as tight as it will go to keep from messing up the nut on the fan.

 

I know people talk about hammers and adjustable wrenches all the time, but honestly the best tool is the right one.

Buying the official Land Rover special tools for the fan clutch was the best purchase I ever made. Taking the clutch off is literally a 20 second affair now.

The official tool has the gas engine fan-nut size on one end, and the diesel engine fan-nut size on the other.

Add the water pump holder and you're golden!

Yes, the clutch is a right thread.

After the first time I took off the fan, I immediately went inside and ordered the tools. I have not been sorry. I've used them three or four times since and there's no more struggle.

 

I agree, always best to use the correct tools, but $170 for the set is kinda out there.
If I find myself working on these alot I will order the correct land rover specific tools but, on my first rover I've only had the fan off once in 7 years.

 

i think I used the $16.00 tool from BA. worked fine

 

Now that's good to know. I will add that to my list.
