Default Replace Oil Pan Gasket or not to clean engine sludge?

Hello All,
This oil change is approaching my 90,000 mark. For the last 500 miles i was going to add the large bottle of Mavels Mystery oil to clean out some engine gunk. I had also planned on pulling the oil pan and cleaning the sludge since I did not do this @ my 60k service.

Question: It is necessary to replace the oil pan gasket, or can I just bolt it back up? It looks like a good thick rubber as I have a spare from an 04 i parted out.

Additionally, I guess its time to change the Trans fluid, Rotate the tires and lube the front drive shaft. Sounds like a afternoon full of fun with my new Craftsman creeper!

Replace it, its cheap and you will regret it if you don't. Btw the first time I replaced my oil pan gasket I got a cheap aftermarket one, it was crap and leaked. Then I got one from AB and its much better, just get the right one and don't try to save a few $ on a cheap after market gasket.

Right on,
Its probably a good idea to replace it.
I may get this one from Miamirovers. I have bought a lot from them. I have heard AllMakes England has good OEM parts.

I just Called AB & asked who supplies their oil pan gaskets for a 99/04 Discovery. They said All Makes England. $21 free shipping on eBay sounds good to me!

Also Just checked out in my garage from my dissasembled 04 engine and there are no built in anticrush washers in the oil pan gasket. Sould be fun as I get to use my new Craftsman air ratchet to remove all those 18+ bolts.

Don't forget the sealant on the timing cover and rear main to block gaps (RAVE has a picture).

That's the cheap one I got that was crap, it came folded up in an unmarked zip lock bag. The folding crease never came out and caused hassles when installing the oil pan and there are no washers embedded in it like the OE one.

Ok guys,
I'll spend the extra bucks and get the one from AB since you all have been thru this before.

Bryan H. Are you talking about putting a bead of pearmatex Good Stuff on the main seal and bottom of the timming cover? I will have a look in the RAV.
Thanks
Dave

Yes, but I used permatex black (the oil and gas, high heat resistant sealant). You just put .25" wide strips across the width of the pan lip in those four places (not across the entire timing cover and main seal), and two dabs over the cruciform seals (just to the inside of the rearn main to block gap). RAVE shows a good picture of this.
