replace PS pump or install new seal???
2002 Disco II
My power steering fluid has drained completely from my car. Landrover quoted me $1,055.37 for parts and labor to replace the 3 hoses. I decided to try to fix it myself and purchased the hoses from roverparts.com for $169. I replaced the hoses and wala, the hoses weren't the fix, its the pump. Seems like once there is pressure in the system the fluid is leaking out of the gasket on the pump. I found a Power Steering Pump Seal for sale here (Best Parts Online Product List). My question is, is has anyone replaced the gasket and it fixed the issue? I have searched quite a bit and only found people that replace the entire pump. I would rather pay $20 for this seal kit than $300 for a pump. |
carpe06303,
Does the pump also make considerable noise when the wheel is turned, i.e. is air being sucked into the pump? I have a similar problem and would like to know how the seal replacement turns out if you decide to do it. |
Others have posted that they resealed the pump with RTV.
At $20 give the seal kit a shot and let us know. |
It only started making noises after the PS fluid drained out. Other than that, no noised.
|
I vote go got the $20.00 o-ring & put a thin coat of RTV on it.
|
After finding your post, I decided to also give the seal kit a try. I actually only used the pump casing gasket (didn't bother with the shaft seals), and the symptoms have completely stopped. It drives like a dream now. So, yes. For $20, I would recommend it.
|
My seal was busted and I used universal gasket material and RTV and it has worked like a charm. Just do it right and tighten like hell. I also replaced the return hose with tubing and springs from autozone. Beats paying 100 bucks in hoses and whatever it is for a new gasket.

power steering pump/hoses t 160k miles
i had a leak....ok...not a leak, a gusher out of the power steering pump area. it "looks" like the suction hose, but in reality it is the pump. for anyone having this problem, let me tell you my experience....i first removed the pump, and resealed it with rtv.....and did not change the suction hose, used the old one.....after about 5 minutes no whining sound, everythings seemed good...then test drive......leaking started again, not as severe as first time but the same.....removed everything again, bought a reman pump, and a new suction hose, and reinstalled everything, no leaks, all good. one note::: bleeding the power steering box is a pain......there is a trick one other member posted somewhere, and i congrat him on it, take a long piece of vacuum tubing and place it on the nipple, and the other end submerged in your full p/s reservoir.....run the engine, then lock to lock, do not need to jack up the car....it works like a charm...then tightened the nipple.
|
also for newbies to this project, the gasket is most definitely bad, but inside the pump, there are valves and it also be stuck of malfunctioning....so if you are short on time for repair, get a replacement pump it saves a lot of agravation....but if you have the time to tinkle with it and can install and remove the pump multiple times.....then by all means tinker away....but i warn those that sometimes the whining sound is due to a "bad" pump as well as a bad gasket.....so if your rig has a lot of miles it is better to change the pump and not worry about it......

ps gasket
for all of you you have never seen the ps gasket it is like plastic, razor thin....i double replacing it with gasket material will be good due to tight tolerances to fit the pump back into bracket...it is very tight squeeze......better to use rtv if you are so incclined and let the rtv set for ahile before reinstall.....but i recommend a replacement pump......strongly........
|
I used the fiber gasket material and a coating of Copper RTV on both halves of the pump and let it cure for 24 hours in my house. So far no issues.

Finally got it all back together. Ended up completing;
Long story short, the main gasket from the fixed fixes my PS leaks. BTW, the 3 hoses for the PS from the stealership is $402.87 and $652.50 in labor. This is what they told me the problem was. So I went to roverparts and ordered the three hoses for $175.....only to find out they were wrong to begin with....at least i have new hoses. $5,900 for dealership quoted to complete all the work cost me about $2000 and 4 months of my time on and off. |
Photo step by step tutorial how to re-seal Land Rover power steering pump
Hi,
I created a photo tutorial how to re-seal the power steering pump on Rover. I think it might come in handy for you, because this pump is the same as on some Land Rovers. For tutorial please check the following listing: Rover Power Steering Pump Gasket + step by step tutorial / Land Rover fits too | eBay Hope helps. Sebastian |
since this thread is back from the dead, has anyone tried using jb weld to reseal the pump? A local independent rover dealership said to use a thin coat of jb weld on the 2 halves to reseal. You can never take it apart again but, it should never leak again according to them.
|
I'd say using a universal gasket material is a better option. You'd get a thicker seal and it would still be serviceable unlike jb weld. This is what I've done and so far I've had no problems.
|
What thickness or is there just one size? Autozone carries a couple of different types
|
It should give a description of what each one can be used for. I got mine from autozone as well, it was the grey colored material. You'll probably want to torque the new seal over spec, just don't break the bolts.
|
I use a 1mm thick material with galvanized steel core. Such seals is here in the CR in more than 20 cars and neither leak again. I got it on the car 3 years and everything is fine.
Complete gasket can supply for £12 +£3shipping to UK. Here is the photo of that gasket: http://www.listingfactoryhost.com/us...0543_large.jpg |
PS bracket bolts
Anyone know where i can get the bolts that hold the bracket for the Power steering pump on to the engine? there are 3 of them on there. I cross threaded one of them when i was putting it back together for the 100th time. I have a leak in my PS system and like all of you I tried replacing the hoses first and now i have just broke down and purchased a new pump. my rover has 99,000 miles on it so i figure its about time anyway. So i need a couple new bolts. anyone know where to get them?

Land rover power steering pump gasket

The main gasket has sealant on one side. Does that go towards the aluminum cover or the steel pump?

Mine was leaking pretty bad. Emptied the entire contents of the resevoir out overnight. I ordered the kit online and just replaced the gasket in the middle between the two halves. Doesn't leak anymore.

I replaced my PS pump with al Allmakes from British Pacific at about $330 for the part.
We have an Allmakes PS OEM pump in: 1997 Discovery 2001 Discovery II. Running fine. But, the most satisfaction will be in rebuilding your pump, I am sure. |
Here's the rebuild video using kotek's sk-9170 or 28-1930 kit.

New PS pump about $230.
British Pacific. Aftermarket. Took about an hour to install. Don't over tighten the 3 10mm bolts on the pulley - it will break the pump metal. Bleed it with the bleed screw on the steeering box. and you are good to go. Fairly easy job. Just slow with the hoses. |
