Default Replacing Electric Fans

Do you really have to remove the radiator and condensor (as it says in rave manual) to replace the electric fans in front of the condensor?

Please tell me you can do it through the grill opening??

Can't say for sure on a D1, Down load a Rave CD and read up on the procedure.

I have the rave cd, read through it. It says remove the radiator and condensor.

It also tells you to check the tranny fluid level when HOT. Plus other minor discrepencies I dont recall off the top of my head

I'm thinking on a DII you can get to them through the little "hatch" under the front grill. The Rave CD seems to be geared toward getting the most money from a repair possible. I always think through each step the first time because some of the steps are not necessary and actually make the job harder. Some steps are just plain wrong too.

I'm sure spike will be along soon enough with a definitive answer.

The rave is VERY usefull, but some thing I just go, HUH??.

Worst case, I'll pull the grill and try it that way first.

Pull the grill and try it that way.
The Rave is going to be the best way to do it but I dont really think you will need to pull the radiator and condenser.

Kenk,

I just did this replacement to my 98 D1. You can do this via the front w/o removing the Radiator. You do need to take apart afew things to do it. And make sure you soak all of the bolts with some PB Blaster before you start taking things apart (time + water + front of truck= some rust). Work the bolts slowly in and out so you don't snap them off. Here's what you will need to do:

1. Remove front grill- (the peice between the head lights only) Once you have the three philp screws out of the top you will need to wiggle it to left or right to remove.
2. Remove the hood catch latch (just let it dangle)
3. remove the two diagnal cross bars(top are bolted in with the hood latch/the bottom is bolted to the body) FYI...DONT try to move these bars out of the way without unbolting them completly and removing them. they will snap like tooth picks.
4. Remove the bolts that holds the AC cooling coil in place(long-round). lean it forward, this will help with the access to the fans.
5. Remove the top bolts (left and right side) for the Radiator mounting bracket and lean it back. you will need the access the fan power connectors that are mounted up, underneath the section of framing by the hood latch. (follow the fan wires, you'll see what I mean).
6. Remove bolts for fans and replace with the reverse procedures.

Just do your self a favor as soon as you bolt the fans in.... turn the Key to the ACC position (no need to start up the truck) and turn on your AC to make sure the fans come on. Once you have them running, put'r back together. good luck.
