Default Rooftop restoration

Inspired by Extinct, and a few Plasti-Dip videos, I’m about to rejuvenate my roof prior to installing a new Voyager roof rack…

Today, I took a couple of pictures of roof pre-cleaned. Clear coat damage is probably typical (but rest of truck paint

is in great shape). You likely can’t see the sap, mung, and other stuff growing on the roof… I used a cleaning agent from dipyourcar.com that looked and smelled suspiciously like Dawn detergent to clean roof and rails prior to ‘painting’.

if the weather cooperates, I’ll spray this weekend. I plan to apply a black base coat (4-6), followed by a metallic topcoat.

I anticipate that Plasti-Dip as a finish may be controversial, but I’ve seen some really nice work. Hopefully it holds up. I was quoted $1000 locally to paint roof, so if this method is viable, a substantial savings. Will post additional info and pictures of the experiment.

I sprayed mine with plasti-dip. I like it so I ended up making it permanent with Herculiner spray. Good luck with your project!

Would a plastic wrap do the job cheaper and it easy to replace

Not sure. My neighbor owns 4 Mini Coopers that he is continuously wrapping and unwrapping to become proficient. He’s pretty good at it now. I think the raw material cost may be comparable (though I’m not sure), but the learning curve is much steeper. Having something professionally wrapped in my area is quite expensive. If my experiment fails, I’m in it about $150 USD - a drop in the bucket for a Disco owner!

Best,

I picked up a disco recently with the top painted black because of deteriorating paint. The black paint was thick and heavy like an undercoating material.. I had a shop paint it back to factory bc I didn’t like the difference in color combo!

looking fwd to pics as you execute yours!

what'd you pay and did they remove the sunroof and roof bars? I'd like to have mine redone next year. hoping to get it done for around or under $1000. there's already orange peel in the paint, so it doesn't have to be a show stopper.
