Default Rough gear change after transmission fluid/filter change

2000 D2 with 82000 miles. I followed the directions (https://landroverforums.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=23070) and changed the transmission fluid & filter, which had never been changed before. All seemed to go fine.

No major problems when I started driving it, but I've noticed that it does a jerky change from 2nd into 3rd when I have it in Drive (and back down from 3rd to 2nd). Other gears seem to be fine.

I've read that some transmissions have to relearn the right time to change gears after a fluid change. In my case, I used a bottle of Lucas with about 5 qts of ATF, so the fluid I put in was thicker than what I took out.

So should I just keep driving it and wait for it to correct itself, or reset the ecu and let it relearn everything, or a third option?

Just to be clear, it's not extremely jerky. If the car were a manual, you wouldn't think twice about the movement. But it's still much rougher than the other gears or it was before I changed the transmission oil.

With that many miles on the old stuff it was bound to have some small particulates in it. There is a good chance that a small piece got into a spool valve and just needs to work its way out. If that is the case it shouldn't take more than a few days of stop and go driving to work it out.

First off let me get this out of the way, all Lucas is crap and is only for beaters you are trying to get rid of or get a few more months out of before scrapping, period.

OK now what kind of fluid did you use? Also how did the old fluid look?

Good fluid. How many times did you drain and refill?

Just once. But given that it doesn't seem to like the thicker stuff, I may drain it again and add just ATF in....

Yeah I agree you should drain and refill at least twice. Right now You have 60% old fluid, 40% new fluid and 10% Lucas. Another drain and refill will get you around 75% new fluid. Drive around with it like it is now for a week or so to let the new fluid do some cleaning then rinse and repeat. After the next drain and refill you can do just one drain and refill once a year or every other year to keep the fluid refreshed.

If you are going to shoot you mouth of about a product, back it up with good technical information or drop it.

I recently had the transmission changed out in my DI. When I went to pick it up, it was shifting hard. Took it back to the shop and one of the techs got in and rode around with me for 30 minutes or so. We would drive and adjust and drive and adjust. After about 4 or 5 adjustments, the tranny shifted like silk, better than it ever had before. Amazing. I know that the DII tranny has eletronic controls but sometimes it is worth paying an expert to do what they do. Good luck. If it continues to give you problems, it may be worth having a good tranny mechanic take a look and make an adjustment or two. All the best. Merry Christmas. Phil
