Rust under cargo carpet ... problem?
Hi guys n gals,
When I passed my annual tech inspection, the owner remarked that my Disco was very clean in the back cargo area, as in no rust. He said that he sees a lot of Discos with serious rust back there, and he sees a lot with wet foam under the carpet. His belief is that the wet foam causes the rust he sees. Makes sense to me.
Have others among you had or seen this problem? I reckon that the water gets in there via a sunroof or rear door weatherstripping problem. I have no snrfs, and the rear door rubber is good.
But it got me to thinking, do we really need all that absorbent foam back there? I suppose that it contributes a lot to the quietness on the road. Why not cut some closed-cell packing foam up to fit in there instead? It at least soaks up no water, and should deaden sound too. Then put a big rubber cargo mat on top of it all and Bob's yer uncle!
What do y'all think?

I think the sunroof is probably the correct answer, i'm sure everyone have been left open in the rain one or more times. I would look to use The Official Dynamat Website to replace the foam, it is a peel and stick rubber based sound proofing use widley in the after market.

there are a lot of other alternatives out there. I've personally used a lot of raam mat.
