Default Scan Gauge Water Temps - What to do?

Hey Gents,

I got a scan gauge this morning, and have it mounted. It's amazing, and I already don't know what I did before I got it.

My Rover has "heated up" twice so far this morning, and I'm about to leave for Wisconsin... so I'll be reading your replies to this on my iPhone, but probably won't be able to reply.

For those who haven't been following my situation: I just got a new block, t-stat, and water pump.

My Temp while driving is between 208-214.

While idling most of the time, it's a solid 220, and doesn't move.

The two times it's spiked, it got up to 242. Turning the heat on HIGH takes it back down to 220.

Am I hurting my engine?

Thanks guys... any other advice is appreciated.

Pat

Based on a friend of mine's 03 readings with a scan gauge on his 03, you are running too warm. Adams truck runs from 197 to around 206, so far and that is driving around Denver and going up into the mountains.
I would think either you clutch is failing, your electrical fan is not running or your radiator is restricted.

Have you tried the easy stuff like hosing off the outside of the radiator and flushing out the engine and radiator with a hose and then use a radiator flush product to really clean it out? Swap out the thermostat just in case also.

Thanks for the posts! At a rest stop, on my phone:

fan is working fine. T-Stat is wide open.

Get this- what do you guys make of it?

The temp climbing has NOTHING to do with air or speed on the road! I figures it out: if it starts warming up, and I rev it to 2500 or more (4,000 works really well) it cools down to 198 after just a few seconds.

Just had a new pump put in... Is it bad? Could I still have blockage in the radiator?

Thanks!!!

Bled the coolant system in the parking lot of the hotel this morning. No air appeared to come out, but now it's idling at a cool 198 degrees.

I imagine it'll be good for 2 or 3 days, like last time.

What do you guys make of the RPM thing in the previous post?

THANKS!!

you are bleeding it properly by lifting the expansion tank? when was the last time you replace the thermostat?

Yep, I'm lifting it very high, and bleeding it fully.

I've put 6 thermostats in this Rover since January, trying to diagnose different things.

def not the thermostat. im wondering if the coolant is flowing properly. maybe the radiator has a partial blockage.

Ed, that's kind of what I'm wondering. There's only so many things that it could be when revving COOLS the engine, right?

I was sitting in traffic in Chicago, and every time it hit 210 degrees, I'd pop it into Neutral and run it up to 2,500RPM for about 5 seconds. That would put it right back down to 198 or 200. It would take about 30 seconds to warm back up to 210, and I'd do it again.

So, increasing the flow fixes it... I'll check on that blockage when I get back.

Is there a chance the blockage will come loose and get stuck in my block and ruin something? Or is that very unlikely?
