********2003 NOT 2004 SORRY FOR THE MIX UP*******

I have owned a 2002 Disco 2 SE7. Was a great vehicle for the most part. I really miss it. Anywho, I came across a local deal for a 2003 Disco II SE. 1 owner, 83,000 miles in absolute IMMACULATE condition. Was a California car. The asking price is 9500usd. I keep reading all the "complaints" and they all seem to be talking about the same thing.....oil pump failure resulting in complete replacement of the engine being the only way to fix it. Is this true? or is there a way to be proactive before I have to be reactive? First post here bu

04's didn't have much of a problem with the oil pump, but either way, 9500 USD is about 5 times too much

 

Only some 03's had problem due to oil pump & most failed in early years/miles, almost non with that issue made it passed 30-40k miles, no other year had same issue,
that being said oil pumps do crack on these engines every now and then, there are cases that oil pump's lasted passed 200k miles, you don't have to replace the engine for a cracked oil pump, lots of ppl just replace or check them when doing head gasket or notice oil light staying on a little too long on start up or flashing when idling,
Clean and nice examples of D2 are becoming more rare as these vehicles are getting older, I personally like the 04's best they are the most complete ones out of the factory & a good 4.6 has so much more torque & power compared to 4.0, that you fell the difference right away if you hop from one to another,,
83k miles is relatively low , some may say price is too high, personally I prefer a great example over a not so great one, & would pay more for it, you save some money in beginning when you buy a lower priced vehicle, but with D2's you end up spending what you saved in beginning in later months, doesn't mean more expensive one won't need maintenance money to be spend on, but overall will need less repair work if in great shape, you usually get what you pay for, I own two D2's, the 04 I paid more than most ppl will pay for, but knock on wood so far after 3 years, I have only done regular fluid change & maintanece on it, so I am happy , & it could have cost me same if I had bought a cheaper one & fixed this and that over the years,,,,
Still try to talk him down on price if you can, but if it's really nice & you want to keep it for a while don't worry about spending a little more than market value, these trucks are never an investment, but they are extremely enjoyable and fun with a special caracter that's my opinion,

 

After owning, working, and researching till my eyes bled on discoveries, I've decided on this rule of thumb: pay $1000-3000 for a decent running truck, and another $500 for a non-running parts truck.

I wouldn't pay more than 6k for a pristine model that was well modified.

I noticed that from picture, roof rail & 2003 on front windshield was the giveaway,!! Hahaha
So it's a dealer selling it not the original owner, I would not pay that kind of money for it anymore, 2 reasons, first one it's an 03 not 04, second it's a dealer, & he got it for less than half of what he is asking. Keep looking & buy one from actual owner of car.

 

i would say the same. He wants to bend you over n give it to you hard. Hell you can get a good used lr3 for that price

 

While the price is a little steep I've noticed the vienna greens do sell for a premium, it's in my opinion the best looking color. I would honestly pay 6-7k for that truck if it has all records, and runs well.

 

The dealer paid no more than $3500 if it was a trade. That's top $ mind you and dealers aren't in the habit paying top $. $9500 is way too much and they know it. Keep looking OR if you have some time on your hands make an insulting offer and see what they come up with for an out the door price.

I bought my first Disco off a dealer ( young and dumb) and brought it back the next day and got my money back. Had to bring it back on a tow truck, big lesson learned.
