Using CDL in snow really depends on the conditions. If there's likely to be a fair bit of wheel slip (like good snow pack on the road with no or minimal bare spots) then I lock it.
Ian Ashcroft reports too much speed difference between front and rear with the center diff unlocked will cause early center diff failure. Same effect as driving with something like a 28" and 30" tire on the same axle.

Mine is low budget too. $15 in parts vs. $400. I'll take the $15 option all day long.

No it's just a 3/8" drive thumbwheel ratchet from harbor freight.

I drive with mine locked in the snow all the time, nothing better for the most traction on the highway at 70mph than having the CDL locked in hi.
I drove 4hrs (200 miles) in a blizzard one Christmas Eve with the CDL locked, we were passing snow plows and people in the ditch.
I have found at low speeds, like in the city, with the CDL locked the front end pulls and helps keep you from fishtailing while taking off from a stop or making turns.

I don't want to sound snobby or anything, but I can't imagine using any solution that didn't look factory. I just appreciate a clean look, perhaps it's a waste of money, but after a year your wallet doesn't feel the pain anymore
