Personally. I prefer to use a tire cover. Exposed spare tires tend to dry rot from the UV. I just havent gotten a new cover since going to larger tires.

 

Black Magic works well. It seems to put the oil back in the vinyl. Take a few applications as it soaks it up over a day or to, until it will not soak up any more.
