Straight pipe

Straight pipe
I live in the uk and I am trying to get my 2003 discovery 2 diesel back on the road. The exhaust wasn’t the best so I’ve cut the 2 rear silencers off and I don’t know if a straight pipe is legal because of the legal volume on the car. I also don’t know where to get a larger exhaust from so I can push more air out the engine. Thanks.

I run a straight pipe exhaust on both my 7.3 excursion and my 2.0 VW TDI swapped 87 4 runner.
The 7.3 is pretty loud at idle, I have to turn off the engine at drive a drive thru to place my order. Found down the road I don't hear it in the rig. 4 inch exhaust believe
The 4 runner is quiet enough to place a drive thru order without turning off the engine. It's a soft top so get a noticeable diesel drone at certain sustained rpms I wouldn't hear if it was in a nicely sound dampened disco 2 luxury rig. 4 runner has 2.5" mandrel bend exhaust, used as a daily driver. My mud tires and flapping soft top are much louder than the drone
I'm starting to piece together the parts to install a Mercedes diesel in the little ladies disco 2, I will not run any mufflers on it either.
We have no state emissions inspections here. Many are not so lucky. Because of the age of my vehicles I don't believe I'm violating any state laws, my decibels really only get up there when I give it heavy throttle and I drive them like diesel trucks not a Ducati, therefore not making enough noise to draw attention from anyone who might question my exhaust.
While they are loud they are not any louder than many cruiser factory motorcycles or your average flow master V8 pickup truck or car. The turbo acts as a muffler so it's much quieter than a N/A petrol engine with straight pipe, especially a V8 petrol.
I rev my exhaust just once on my daily commute, I pass a great Pyrenees right before I get home. His fence borders the road. As soon as he hears me round the bend he climbs down his steps to greet me. If I rev it a little going up the hill he will give chase. Being he's wagging his big fluffy tail each day when I round the bend I oblige him with a little throttle. He seems to be the only one who notices my exhaust set up.

You can remove and discard or sell all the stereo components, will help paying for the pipe. And you will not be riding a Disco, you will be riding a noise.
When we were 17, a Malibu from a friend got a piece of 2" threaded water pipe forming a 'Y' welded at the exhaust by under the driver feet. When daddy let the car on weekends, the cap was unscrewed to yield all the noise. Going back home, cap was screwed in again. He never noticed.
