O.k. I'm gonna try to sum this long drawn out saga.

I have had intermittent problemstrying to getmy 2000 DII to start. I have had it towed from client sites three times in 2 months. It's been to a local foriegn auto mechanic, the Land Rover Dealer, and now another local foriegn auto mechanic. The first two places said it was associated with thesecurity system, said I just need to make sure I turn the key to the left when unlocking. HELLOOOOOOOOOOO. Before I took it anywhere the first time I changed out the crank sensor. The otherdaywhile I was driving it stalledfor a split second. The next morning I started the truck and after about 4 seconds it stalled and shut off. I started it back up and it did the samething. The 3rd time it just cranked and wouldn't start...alot like it had been doing over the last few months. got it towed again and now the mechanic saysthe fuel pressure and pump are fine, but it's not getting any spark. I asked if it could be the plug wires and he said no. I put new wires on last year (Auto Zone type). He thinks it may be the computer and suggests taking it back to the dealer-they were completely useless but kind enough to inform me that I'll need some lubrication for this:

Yeah, this truck leaks a little, but I stay on top of it and it's always run fine. Seems like it should have more power at times though when towing a 5 X8 trailer.There maybe a quarter size puddle of oil on the ground when left over the weekend, but that's it. You can see some coolant leaking under the hood, but I onlyhave to replace about 2" of coolant every month or so. I put about 2500 miles on this truck every month. Oil changesevery 3000 miles.

Do you think I should have this thing towed back to my house and try replacing the plug wires or is it the computer or something?

 

If you used store brand plug wires (now a year old) I'd guess it was that. You may want to try replacing those with some magnecores.

 

Start with a tune up, new plugs and wires. And I mean NOT AutoZone wires either.
I just used Kingsbourne plug wires on my truck and so far so good, but its only been a few 300 miles.
But either Land Rover or Magnecor wires will work great.
The dealer wants to bring the truck back to new, hell, you could replace it for what they want to charge.

You are using premium gas, right?

 

Well,yesterday I had to get it towed from one mechanic to another. There's another $125.00 down the drain, plus another $150 for the 3 hour diagnostic fee. I didn't get much in the way of replys so I figured it'stoo much for people to figure out online, understandably so.

To top it off I broke offthe plastic connector that goes into the throttle body. I'll attach a pic. When it rains it pours!

I am the 2nd owner. It had 75,000 on it when I bought it and 2 years later it has 151,000 miles on it. I have never put anything in itother than the highest octane at the pump.

Where dids you get those Kingsbourne plug wires?

You will beable to return your AutoZone wire if they have the lefetime warrenty like mine did, so my new wires were free.

I broke that stupid piece too. It was $10.99 at the dealer part # ERR 6880. Getting it out was a pita as they used locktite on it. I had to use a propane torch to melt the plastic and then use a thread chaser to get any plastic bits removed. I used the new part to find the thread size.

 

sorry to hear about all the rover problems, not trying to sound like a smarta** but if you put 37K miles/year on a vehicle have you considered buying something that requires less maintenance than a rover and just using the rover as a weekend vehicle? That way you would have time to diagnose problems and work on the rover at home.

 

FWIW I went to Lowes and replaced that plastic piece with a brass one from the plumbing section.It must be a common thread size.It only cost a few bucks and it's not going to break again.

 

He uses it for work, I believe that he is a contractor.
He pulls a enclosed trailer around all day long.
