Default Strange/Scary new noise in my disco

OK...I loaned my D2 to my brother in law for a couple weeks and got it back a couple days ago and today is the first time i have had a chance to drive it. On a short trip to the store, after I accelerated over about 40 i started to hear a slight clicking noise. But it was faint because I had all the windows down(it is close to 90 in SoCal)...rolled all the windows up except driver side and can definitely hear a new "clicking" sound and very rapid...then I let of the gas and the sound turns into a "winding down click click click" at about 30 it stops. I pulled over put it into neutral rev'd the engine...no sound. Put it in to drive...accelerate hard and let off the gas....loud clicking sound returns.

I'll be honest it scares the crap out of me...it sounds like it is gear related and can't be good news. any advice would be super appreciated.

THANKS!

you kind of need to remove it to have a good look at the centering ball

dry bearings at the u joint ends and centering ball. crunchy rough spots as you articulate it by hand. needle bearings missing/ coming out of uj caps
